Don’t confuse me with the rest of the guys bent out of shape over this guy. I couldn’t care less what people do on social media. My comment is about the reference to mainline Captain rank being considered a legend status. It’s a hell of an accomplishment to upgrade at a legacy, but legends we most certainly are not.

Some are better at it than others. Somehow, we’ve operated just fine with some pretty marginal peeps in the left seat.

Yes we have. But most of them who needed special attention were scabs. And the company moved heaven and earth to get them through. Not sure if our current group of pilots will be afforded the same courtesy. Hell, American even has a term for it. Up or out. It’s in place to root out the weak links. I think we’ve beat this to death. Peace.

Well with that bizarre rationale I guess most people were just “jelly” of Ivan the Terrible, right?

JHC. Legendary?!? Becoming a captain is based on two things; Luck getting hired, and timing of that luck (seniority). There is ZERO skill involved in the promotion. Anyone that thinks they’re a CA because they are better than the rest… isn’t. One of the worst captains I ever flew with commuted across the country to hold it because his ego required that fourth stripe.

This profession appears to have impacted you negatively, apparently. You sound like one of those guys that likes to complain about anything even if there is nothing.

You took what I said out of context. I never said the guy was a legend. I also never said major airline Captains are legends. I said that he/she who gets to this level and upgrades to Captain is a process considered a legendary accomplishment. And it is, without a doubt, exactly that. Unless you become a check airman, you’ve reached the highest level of airman.

Therefore, the act of finally getting to become a major airline Captain, as you retrospectively look at how much blood, sweat and tears went into getting there, is pretty legendary. That does NOT mean they are legends.

You, my friend, clearly lack emotional intelligence. I can’t believe I had to explain this to you.

Also, getting to a major and upgrading has nothing to do with luck. The only thing that I’d consider “luck” is getting this entire profession paid for by daddy.

There are some extremely “legendary” captains amongst us. The no fly list 1%’ ers come to mind.

Well, except for the airlines that don't hire people who haven't proved that they can cut it.

and who might that be? Because every single major airline in the US has pilots who from time to time don’t make it through upgrade.

I found upgrade to be a non-event and pretty much the same standards and training that I’ve had for years. I’m all for people exercising their seniority and staying in the right seat by choice, but if someone can’t cut upgrade, they are probably pretty weak in the right seat as well. Thankfully those people are few and far between.

Same. But, that’s not what I was asking. Someone said that some airline doesn’t ever hire anyone who has those issues. I’m just curious to whom he’s referring. I doubt he’ll say because we all know it’s not true. That’s all. Every carrier has a few problem children.
