Default United Mask Policy

I’m hoping someone can shed light on United’s Intl Mask policy. On 4 flights in the past 2 months from US to NRT I have been able to be mask free on 2 flights until stepping off jet in NRT and the other 2 including last week the masks were enforced the entire flight. Is this a policy decided by individual lead FA?

Trying to stay with United on my DHs but will gladly switch to another US carrier that doesn’t require it on entire flight.

Thanks

https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...tions-map.html

Our intranet states that they are required for NRT flights

Pretty sure the requirement is the more conservative of the two countries being served, not the carrier. It's frustrating to see inconsistent application of polices, but over the last two years, especially in this industry, can anyone be truly surprised?

I was told by an FA when I was flying to LIS, which also requires masks, that the FA policy now is that they make an announcement and if you choose not to comply, they leave you alone. Obviously we unfortunately have our fair share of militant FAs so act at your own peril, but as long as you're on board, their only job now is to inform you of the policy but they can't ban you or whatever anymore. I'd verify this with the crew on your flight to make sure they're cool, but most don't really care as long as you're wearing it getting off the plane going into the terminal.

The answer is spelled out in a Pilot Bulletin from early May.

The rules vary by station & can be found in the “Station” section of Pilot Mobile. The FAs also have access to the specific announcements for each flight in their electronic devices, which outline the respective requirements. I’ve also seen inconsistent application on some city pairs, which is frustrating, but it usually means the time it wasn’t enforced, you were getting a freebie.

Based on your post, it sounds like you are from another carrier (possibly cargo or biz aviation).

Our internal site states that "Government or regulatory restriction requires use of an approved mask/face covering onboard the aircraft for this destination." The same applies to a few other countries such as Canada and Mexico. Required to be worn the entire flight, unfortunately, not just upon landing. It's not a United policy; it's from the Japanese government.

Flew to Canada and Mexico and was told we didn’t make anyone wear the mask until landing. To enforce it otherwise makes absolutely no sense. The rules only apply in the country that requires masks, not in the air

Not sure who "told" you, but technically passengers are required to wear the mask on the inbound flight per that country's order. Passengers are asked to wear masks getting on plane at US departure point, and appropriate announcements are made to that effect by FA's. I don't believe the mask policy is strictly enforced inflight. Obviously upon leaving the plane, Canada and Mexico both require a mask.

The wearing of masks on the inbound flight is so as not to spread COVID among the passengers before deplaning. I think there is some sense there.

Leaving Canada and Mexico, masks are supposed to be worn on the plane until the door closes. How strictly that is enforced is a point of further debate.
