He wanted the 777 FO lifestyle that FedEx offers, he didn't live in any United 777 base (did live in a super senior 787 base tho), and he did not want to commute to one of the UA bases.

If you’re in base at JetBlue and United, you’re in a UAL junior base and can be a widebody FO year 2 which would take you till year 8 to reach as a 320 FO at JetBlue. Captain upgrades are also quick in UAL coastal bases.

UAL will likely be ahead in pay for the rest your career also.
