There is a lack of premium flying and a lack of the flexibilities the the ULCCs have at the moment. I'm over a year in and have frustrations that I think should be different, but I'm happy in the switch. In the big picture, especially over a career, it was a much better move based on the info I had available at the time. I still believe that for what it's worth.

I have asked this to every single FO I have flown with in the last year that left Spirit/JB/Allegiant etc and all of them have told me without question it was the best decision they have ever made.

Its going to get worse over the next 4 years. I think the ULCC model will fail as the big 4 get much bigger.

If you are hired at United today you will have 8,000 pilots junior to you in about 4 years. Can you say the same at the airline you are at? We are replacing 400 RJs with mainline planes. These planes are on order, and even in a recession, which we are now, we are still taking the planes. Nobody at a ULCC really knows what airline they will be at in 5 years. Maybe Frontier buys JB etc? Not sure that JB (market cap $2.2B) paying $3.8B cash to buy Spirit with a market cap of $2.1B was a smart move, especially since they are not profitable right now. Also your ULCC base could change, as some of the ULCCs have been pulling back flying because of a lack of pilots.

If you’re in the top 15% and have less than 15 years to go, the switch probably doesn’t make sense. But if you have a longer career ahead of you, have not broken into that top-tier schedules, and/or live in a major united domicile, I think it’s worth the gamble.

I think they all go through bk in next decade with fleet upgrades. In the end they will all be entirely different airlines in ten years and the players will look nothing like they do today. All you can do is find your open musical chair and hope for the best.

They don’t treat you like a potential **** up but rather as a professional. The company and union are there to support you. Plus who doesn’t want more money, better work rules and nearly every metric that can be measured. UAL does have bad reserve rules but you’ll be off reserve after a couple/few months.
