Default The problem with polling (at this point...)

I'm all for polling. It's a great practice. We should have been polling every 3-6 months since we pulled out of this COVID dive.

I think we probably DO need a new poll at this time...

Here's the problem:

We are an extremely "uninformed" pilot group. This has been our downfall.
We have been fed the "My union speaks for me" BS for this entire contract cycle.

The way that is supposed to work is pilots provide input, the union compiles it and then that statement becomes true.

However this cycle, the MEC, committees and the SMEs decided they know better than all of us and failed to educate/guide us.

This is only my 2nd contract cycle at United, but the last contract had comm above and beyond what we've had over this cycle.
Did the comm committee just resign btw?

Anyway, we don't collectively know what DL, AA, SWA, NA, AK, JB all have in their contracts.
How do we at this point ask for what people want without knowing the available options that are out there?

Are comm committee, and by default, our MEC has failed to instruct our comm committee on what we need to be educated on.

I don't want to get into the politics here, I'm curious what results might help us get what UA pilots want versus copy/paste of what DL pilots want. We have different contract needs/wants versus what DL pilots need/want.

The black/white numbers are easy, I don't think anyone is going to accept "rates" less than DL/AK at this juncture.

So the "devil's in the details" when it comes to what work rules or scheduling enhancements would work best at United?

Well, instead of 14,000 pilots "making stuff up", we need education on what everyone else has. This doesn't mean that UAL will be "industry leading" in every single section of our UPA, but it probably means we need to move the bar forward with some sections. Even DL didn't get the FC DH that we get to/from training or the crew meals we get if I read their AIP bullets correctly. However, I'm sure there were other parts of their UPA regarding per diem, sick leave/accrual, Short term Disability, etc where they are much further ahead.

Does everyone here know that SWA still has pre-constructed schedules vs a PBS system? Does everyone know that Alaska just gave into a PBS system to get what they wanted in their latest?

Does everyone know that FedEx and UPS still have a Defined Benefit plan? Is that something UAL could pull back into the mix? Do most pilots want a DB plan again? I can't answer these questions for everyone, but they are important questions.

How can the majority of pilots answer these questions intelligently if they aren't informed on what is "out there" in the overall pilot profession?

What is the best way to educate ourselves?
Whatever we do, I think comm/education needs to happen much more expeditiously than in the past based upon the movement lately.

Before anyone just posts a link to the "contract comparison" BS slides, those slides were slanted to pass the TUMI TA without context and left out the good and the bad of some of the strongest contracts out there.

You can't just put a bar graph with "Best Reserve rules" and make stuff up on who's bar is better than another companies. It has to have context.

Bar graphs really only can compare numbers between contracts. They are useful, but not for every section of a contract.

The JetBlue and Spirit MECs published contract comparisons in July and August 2021, respectively. They won't include the new Alaska or agreed-to Delta details, but they're a good start. Google can find them for you.
