What happened here? Any word yet from the school house?

Safety is a difficult endeavor without transparency.

The weather in the area was reported as bad, heavy rain, the rest. Is it as seemingly simple as a form of ‘spacial disorientation’ to some degree??
Not trying to heavily speculate, just don’t see other, obvious reasons for the flight path.

One of two theories.
The first is the new challenge on TikTok how low can you get to the Pacific Ocean multiply by the number of Gs you pull to get out
The second one is the pilot flying was multitasked with setting his NDB frequency while leaning over to grab his en-route sectional chart and out of his kit bag and didn’t realize he was pushing the yoke down while he was doing it and losing altitude.

So wait, they lost control of the airplane essentially…pulled nearly 3gs…almost hit the water and they just merrily continued on to SFO? Something doesn’t add up. And the fact UA has confirmed this is all correct now makes the scenario even more unusual.

A message from a friend:
Gusty takeoff, heavy rain, heavy plane, short runway, and at night. Used flaps 20.
At accel height, CA (PF) called for flaps 5. FO went through the gate and selected flaps 1. When climb rate dissipated, CA looked over to see the lever and unknowingly banked over as well. CA became disoriented and neither pilot noticed the dive until the GPWS warning. 2.7Gs at 775’ AGL to recover.
