While seniority helps for trip drops, how you bid in PBS is a big factor as well. Senior guys get awarded better trips out the gate… and thus don’t drop as much of what they are awarded. PBS ‘over awards’ trips during monthly schedule preferencing. So when monthly trip trading opens on the 24th, the Seniority Trip Trade system allows a modest amount of trip dropping out the gate to grease the trade skids. Trick is, the STT system is more likely to let 1-2 day trips drop into open time than 3-4 day trips. So if you are super junior but bid for blah 1-2 day trips, odds are you’ll have decent success dropping them when trading opens. But four day domestic trips hang on like boogers. Another reason to bid shorter trips is that it is easy to trade a 1-2 day trip for a longer one (seniority permitting). YMMV.

Hey everyone, I have an interview with United coming up soon. I was wondering how the QOL would be if you live relatively close to EWR. I’m about 45 min or so driving distance so I definitely prefer it. How is the trip mix on the 737? Is it easy to get 2 day trips or even a few turns a month if you want them with a little seniority? Thanks!
You can look up the trip mix by going to flightsfrom.com and sorting by departure and 737. Everyone will tell you it's the best trip mix in the system.
The seniority magic happens at better than 50% for a local. I've been there since about 1 year and 3 months of seniority. In August (at 45%) I was able to bid all 2-day trips and trade all the overnights I didn't want into day trips. Sept looks to be shaping up the same way. Nobody knows how the trip mix will change with new rules, but... If 2-days are your jam, you will have a leg up if you are willing to start early or end late. The commuters have avoid statements in for those. Being local means you can wait for the weather to come down, and then camp on CCS waiting for EWR to come apart the trips to go premium. I've snagged some ridiculously productive premium turns when EWR falls apart. The FB warriors love to hate EWR, but for a local its a gift that keeps giving.

I live in Cranford. I roll out of bed 1:15 prior to duty on for early trips. Half of my commute is spent on the bus and getting through security. I've run into the Chief Pilot at the grocery store. Plenty of guys live here and the neighboring towns. I would guess that about 1/3 of the "local" CAs live down on the shore, about a 45 to 1:00 drive. Another 1/3 live out in PA or western NJ. There is a huge benefit to living close local and not really caring about what time a trip starts or ends.

If you are trading into an earlier trip in the bid period, as long as the sum of the reserve coverage on the days for the trip you are trading out of is better than the sum of what you’re trading into, it will happen. That could be as much as 16 days into 1, as long as the math works.
There are different rules for trading out earlier in the bid period to later.
This bad day/worse day trading just went live in the last few years. When enhanced CMPOOL comes, that will change.
