The reason we are talking about here is NOT because it was a willful non compliance rather it has gained notoriety because it was WILLFUL NON COMPLIANCE,VIOLATION of company policy that was CAPTURED ON VIDEO AND BROADCAST by numerous news outlets………that’s why there is a thread about it.

How do you know what is the norm on company charters? Do you work them?…Do you even work at United? Why because the plaintiff said so?…….cant imagine why she’d lie?

I agree with you that willful non compliance that is otherwise not known likely does not result in termination, but why would the company at act punitively if they aren’t even aware of the violation to begin with?

May I ask what do expect the company to do in that situation? It’s on video documenting their own (the crew) reckless behavior…….not to mention the brand damage the company was exposed to.

You may feel differently after you read the transcripts from the hearing. Eye opening to say the least.

There definitely was a culture of leaving the door open on charters. First charter i ever did was ironically a couple months before this incident. I was a relatively new FO, and the captain relatively new to his seat and had only done a couple charters years ago. The Charter coordinator and FAs up front tried to pressure us REALLY hard to leave the door open. It was the end of the season, a few games from the world series, and claimed they ALWAYS left the door open and that the coaches and players wanted the door open. The captain pretty much got in an argument with these FAs over it. That's all I'm going to say. Ultimately, thankfully, both the captain and I were on the same page of keeping the door closed and it was kept close. The flight attendants' displeasure with us was palpable the whole trip. After that experience, I avoid sports charters like the plague. I want nothing to do with it. I got a charter trip on my line more recently and couldn't get rid it. Had a very senior captain lamenting with the flight attendants before the flight that it was a shame at can't keep the door open because of the [this] indecent.

So seems to have been a thing with some teams and crews. For everyone acting like they never heard it, I'm glad you weren't put in the awkward and unfriendly situation we were in when the FAs didn't get their way. To this day I'm thankful i was with a captain where we were both in a agreement. I would not have wanted the dynamic of being the FO and the only one trying to follow the rule on that first charter flight I worked.
