What? You mean you haven't heard the old adage:

"Want to make a million in the airline industry? Start with a billion."

The number of hotel rooms and deadheading created by this shift in flying was absurd. Nothing like spending a dollar to make a nickel, but I guess ticking off the pilots to show us who is in control was accomplished.

Don't know about CAL, but UAL, well before 9/11, had similar mindset. One entity saved a dime and didn't care that 2 other functions spent a dollar for each dime.

I was using the understaffed EWR pairings to my advantage. I got 26 hours of deadhead pay that I never did in October because CAL is not very bright. I'd take a fake deadhead every week from IAH-EWR and just go home. I agree, they should have never taken all of the flying and pushed it to IAH.

This rebasing/new bid is going to be nice for us EWR guys since I dropped 20% since they did it. Now I can get back to 20 days off a month doing the IRO thing. About time!

I went from 71% down to 99.8% because of this..............incredible. And then the person responsible for costing us a LOT OF MONEY, was promoted. Go figure.

Regular bid in January with LAX 737 base addition.

All subject to change but heard from multiple somewhat reliable sources.

75Driver,

I just got done reading the last system bid.

It sure looks like your info was pretty close to the bid that just came out. The bid was even better in numbers, too bad they cancelled 98 of the previous 787 awards. Looks like the bid was manpower neutral with the 7-late-7 delay.

I hope the Jan 2011 bid will open the LAX base, and create slots for UAL guys as well.

Your "somewhat reliable sources" got the first part right. Here is hoping they are on target again.

Thanks again for posting,

SP

I'm assuming this is in lieu of the Jan/Feb bid and they're just doing it early to be proactive (or as proactive as CAL can be) with the latest 787 debacle and changes in domestic flying. Then again, you can take solace in the knowledge I'm usually wrong.

Does the 787 delay and the numbers in the new CAL
System bid end any hope of UAL (little though it was) furloughed pilots coming to CAL this spring? Thanks for any crystal ball thoughts

The way understand it is:
UAL Furloughees were to start coming in after the CAL guys around the spring time. I don't know the exact number, but I thought I heard a couple hundred. This would have been determined after the system bid in 2011 (usually Jan). Now with the 787 delay, it has been pushed back. How far? Hard to say, but CAL delayed the 787 Australia flight 3-4 months, I think, and now Lagos will not be served by a 787 but a 777 initially...

I heard that once the 787 start coming in 2012, they will come fairly quickly, like 2 a month! So they want to have some staffing in place and be able to train the remaining pilots as the frames show up.

It seems the CAL 737 fleet is starting to be worked a little more and I don't think CAL will be properly staffed () with only the CAL recallers.

In short, we should see the crystal ball a little clearer around JAN 2011, when the next system bid comes out. But, I would estimate that there will be some UAL recalls in 2011.

p.s. apologies to the grammar police for any run-on sentences, miss-spelled words.

It's a principle that has been around forever and it is really true. Boeing is a systems integrator. They take multiple parts and turn it into a major system platform. It's much better to have companies who are experts at turning out certain pieces (airframe, wings, whatever components) manufacture and deliver them to Boeing, rather than Boeing (who is a good integrator, but maybe not an expert at manufacturing certain pieces) do it.

That comment about all the problem coming from subcontractors is just some union wrench turner who is mad because his overpaid union job got outsourced to someone who can do it cheaper and better.

Labor unions need to be careful to not set their wages outside of what the market will bear, otherwise their jobs will go away. The UAW is a perfect example. Unions should be there to support their employee's, not demand ridiculous wages.

HA!!!!! Ask Boeing how the outsourcing plan is working for them on the 787.

Bid Cx? What does this mean?

I love the debate here.. What is the latest bid cx going to do for the January bid? Are the 98 - 787 training slots a GO again?
Just another UAL '99 furloughee wondering of possibililities..
