UAL flight 940

Yep, nothing like walking through the terminal to get the hotel van, all sticky and wet, and a nice stain on the shirt...(wait, that doesn't sound right!)

According to the UAL forum, the fluid was water.
As far as coffee goes, a certain Canadian Turboprop can handle a large Dunkin Donuts with cream and sugar and it will not affect its flying abilities what so ever. Sure you'll lose the channeling ability on the number one com, but you can use the FREQ page on the KNS to select a different freq.
And you may see numerous flags on the ADI and HSI as the AHARS units have coffee spasms due to the selector panel being inundated. And there may or may not be some issues with the ADF selector panel, and there may be some weird odors as the sugar and cream cook off......

UA's policy used to be to use lids on the coffee cups....of course, can't tell you how many times catering failed to provide them. On the Bus at least, most of the FA's I'd fly with would pass the coffee over the outside shoulder when you had your seat forward and even put it in the cup holder in many cases. What a nice cockpit design.
Hopefully, there won't be some knee jerk reaction to this incident which is not new by any means. Regulating common sense never succeeds. You are correct however by saying that this type of stuff should be written up. Happened to me twice in my time at UA. Once on the 200 and once on the 300/500. Nothing happened but wrote it up anyway. Then again....we had a lot more mechanics then to deal with it!

called SAMC, and dispatch found a place to land. But he did say all those warnings going off at once made him "pucker up". Me? That seat cover would have had a SPIRE in it!!

Had a Coke fall off the tray, and onto the pedestal, as a flight attendant was bring up the meals to us. As we all know, pressurized A/C and carbonation don't mix. LUCKILY nothing happened to the radios, or anything else. But I needed a new shirt, and MX had to wipe down the CB panel at our destination.

coffee is the big deal because many crews like sugar in it. the coffee isn't a bid deal but the Sugar? welds contacts like STEEL when voltage pass thru it. Saw it light up a fire panel where if the capt hadn't been a "cool hand" he'd have done some real damage to the airplane. As it was, he and the FO looked out the window, didn't see any smoke,

Someone said the actual spill was water. Have no idea if that is true.
I can say, I drink coffee black...no issue there. Also, more than half of the FA's would bring the coffee black, lid on, and provide the sugar/creamer on the side.
I do, however, agree with your position. Had a Capt bring in a "big gulp" type of cup with iced tea. This was the old "shuttle" days in LAX. CS agent came in and kicked it over. Capt had placed it just aft of the 300 pedestal and forgot about it as we were tight on connection. Big cup, 32, 46, or whatever ounces going to the E&E bay we assumed because the lid came off and there was only wet carpet and an empty cup within seconds.
Bottom line, write it up. Let MX do their job. I'd rather be on the ground wishing I was in the air......than the other way around.
On the side, how are things at SAMC?

Changing almost daily! Some of it Good some of it stupid, What I DO know is that unless we do something Pretty QUICK! Taking on all of CAL's airplanes is going to be a master "GOAT ROPE"! They're not preparing fast snough for my taste. We're ALREADY short handed and Managment is sitting around arranging Deck chairs on the TITANIC!! Aside from it being Bone COLD!
