I had a similar pipe-dream as you; a specific airline. Thought I met their desired quals better than anyone else's. I figured I matched the worst at United.
End result: United called and offered; my dream airline never even gave me an interview.
It's a nice fairy tale to work for your favorite company, but do your research, and get the dream of flying at a job that has reality's chance of success. Better chance of success, and future happiness.

Have you ever worked a normal job? Why don't you go be a plumber, it must be fun fishing out hairballs from toilets full of cr@p for $100/hr.. those guys are really living the big life.
If you are really a 767 CA... flying one flight, long layover, one flight.. 5 days off.. $150k per year.. please realize you are doing better than 98% of Americans and most airline pilots in this country. Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself.

I do see what you all are saying, I am definately keeping my options open, however I still have my top 5 list with UAL being at the top. I'm looking
optimistically at the future of the new UAL and feel that it can once again be the United of the 70's-90's that we all remember.

You'll have a much clearer picture of the trajectory of the "new UAL" (United in name only, it's Continental in most other respects ) when the JCBA and SLI are completed. At the current pace of negotiations, that could be a long wait.
Oh, and don't overlook the fact that part of the United of the 70's-90's included the '85 strike. Management sets the tone, and other than during the '94-'00 ESOP years, the tone has not been ringing well for the employees since CEO Pat Patterson retired decades ago.

I hope everyone doesn't think I am disregarding their comments, I am grateful for all of the input. The more information I have, the better decision I can make.

You expect these young and impressionable people to do the heavy lifting only to benefit your concept of reality and that viewpoint couldn't be more unrealistic. I would understand if you offered a less giddy perspective of our industry noting the idiosyncrasies of our profession and the impact of cycles and how one might be affected depending on where they are in that cycle. But to suggest that they are the problem only reveals your ignorance.
Maybe you should consider that grocery store job.

A little advice here from a guy that is NO NOVICE TO THIS PROFESSION. I have almost 30 years working for airlines. Eastern,
United, and now Continental.......trust me, ual is now continental......
LEAVE IT!! Do anything else!!! I dont care what you do, make yourself a better person and stay out of aviation. The industry
simply is NOT worth the hassle. The pay isnt anywhere it should be. I recently had a plumber come over and do some work.
Guess what? His hourly rate worked out higher than mine!! No checkrides, no FAA, no ATC delays, No TSA, no layoffs,
he might have bad management, but he can always leave and take his seniority with him.
Just like drugs. JUST DONT DO IT! Enjoy life, dont miss every holiday, every wedding, every birthday, etc. etc.
Just dont do it!! Before you waste another day, ask ANY major airline pilot what he would do. ANY!!
