With the advent of deregulation JetBlue was able to start from zero and go to hero in no time flat because they had lower labor costs, lower aircraft costs, and city aid to lower terminal costs. There is no labor union on Earth that can compete with rules that offer no protections to older workers in an industry where the structural basis of the costs go up over time no matter what. Meaning the older an airline becomes the more expensive it is to operate, and therefore the more vulnerable it is to be undercut by non-unionized and international competition. Pan Am didn't die because ALPA failed Pan Am. Pan Am died because other pilots undercut Pan Am payrates with B-scales and youth. Labor has no protection or rights in our society because Milton Freedman has convinced the majority of voters that unions are "inefficient" and make workers lazy. People don't realize that it's not a question of labor against labor it's a question of labor against capital. Everything we take for granted as workers such as 5 day work weeks, vacation, paid sick leave, etc. etc. all came from unions, but today unions have become the enemy in the eyes of the public and ALPA could not possibly have won that battle or war even if they acted perfectly at every step,

BUT,

that doesn't change the fact that we still have to fight today as in the battle to keep foreign carriers from undercutting the few advantages we have left in the CONUS travel market, but if we keep quitting ALPA and splintering our voice the war is already lost regardless of the politics.
Your use of the emergence of JetBlue as an example of what we face is an excellent case demonstration of how our current system of pilot labor representation has and is continuing to fail us. "United we win, divided we fail" is the title of this thread and is the very core of what airline pilots have failed to achieve and will never be able to achieve as long as ALPA and the other pilot associations continue to conduct themselves like it is still 1977. Anyone who has spent any time trying to have an input that would change the status quo in their respective pilot associations know how it feels to be told to sit down and shut up. These organizations unfortunately all end up working to keep their grass from burning while the forest goes up in flames. They have all the excuses why they cannot act from fear of the government, the RLA, to the classic "we must be competitive." Being ignored, having your question or comment dismissed out of hand by your union rep at a base meeting is not a pleasant experience and makes one wonder why he gave up a day with his family to commute in early attend these meetings. So what is the answer? Well the line pilots must figure out how to either reform the current system or create a new one. This is indeed a daunting task but the longer the current system is in place the further down the profession will sink. If you think our profession is not losing its' once highly regarded status just consider this, the first major university to have an aviation program, it was contracted by the US Army Air Corps in the early 1930's, is about to abolish it even though the graduates of the aviation program are employed by every airline, are in several positions as airport managers, in the ATC, corporate aviation and even started the University Aviation Association. It is not only a sad day for the university but a sad example of how little regard our profession now has with the general public.
