She came to talk to our upgrade class. I'm sure you know most of what we heard, but......a few highlights
- There is no pool....exhausted
- 12,000 apps on file
- About 2000 apps on file from Xjet pilots, about 1000 from SkyW
- Majority of recent hires have been military. Military pool is all but exhausted. Majority going forward will be from regionals.
- trying to negotiate some sort of flow thru program
- Lead time from CJO to class is 4-6 weeks

About three weeks ago, there was a highly-publicised ALPA-sponsored event at TK. Main purpose? To tell Pay-for-departure guys how to get hired at United.
Hmmmm. Where was the meeting for the mil-guys?
Why the disparity?
As I see it, it appears to be a political power play by ALPA. Pull ALPA RJ-guys out of RJs; RJ airlines can't get qualified applicants; mil guys don't want to go that far backward in pay, so they don't apply.
RJ companies say "What will we do?!?!"
ALPA says "Give them higher pay, and they will stay, or mil guys will apply."
I have nothing against the RJ guys or giving them some insight.
But I think it is wrong to block the mil door.
I don't think there's a shortage. About 12-1500 guys total leave or retire from the armed services each year. The vast majority want either DAL, AA, UCH, or SWA.
On average, 300-375 guys a year for each airline above.
If you screen half, it still leaves 12-15 a month for hiring.
It's political.

There was a blast mail out not to long ago that had a video about the ALPA regional pilot M&G that they put on. At the end of the video they said they were going to do another one specifically for military candidates. Very odd the hiring HR person would say that about the mil pool.

The interview standpoint from the civy side is, we are not a collective group/unit. The mil guys network and communicate 100x better than the civs; Anything from sharing gouges, interview tips, what gets calls etc.. Most civs go into the interview and make up whatever they think is "right." The problem with this is HR is looking for a cut and paste answer with little variance. The mil guys however, do very well. As long as they are not a tool, creep, or dunce. The same applies for civs.
So I don't believe they are mil-blocking as you claim. There are many qualified civs who I can't believe aren't getting calls; The same goes for mil guys who have VERY impressive resumes. No one knows the magic formula except the recruiters.
I believe there should always be the 2-1 rule. Mil guys should be getting hired with about 1/2 the flight time as civs. This is true for United because the average civ is 8-7k hours. While the average mil is 4-3k hours. As one of the recruiters put it: everyone is qualified at the posted minimums to work at United. We select the ones who stand out from the rest as the entire package.

Well, that's good to hear. I didn't know there was a planned mil-event, as well.
Half the guys in my redoc/indoc class were mil; the other RJ. All a good bunch, and I thought a good balance.
But NONE of my mil buds has gotten a call. One had a Senior VP endorsement, and recently won a significant Aviation Award (McKay Trophy). (Delta called him first).
I'm for getting the best person for the job. I hope they keep the mix about where it has been.
