Speaking of 737 to the islands. It's horrible. In fact if I have to buy a ticket, I choose HA. No narrow bodies. My friends do the same. Not being disloyal, but my money goes to the best product. UA is not it.

Fare and expediency (best connections) are 99% of the decision-making process. Hell, most passengers wouldn't know a 757 from a Ford Tri-Motor, let alone an older 757 vs a newer 737.

Look, I'm glad we're getting a *** load of new airplanes and I think the 738 and 739 are good machines when used on the right routes. But seeing what the Smallsack-led management has done to our mainland-Hawaii flying is heartbreaking. Don't take my word for it, talk to the people who really know: the agents on the west coast and in the islands. You want to see EMBARRASSMENT, go talk to those poor people.

Any what percentage do the Hawaii flights represent as total of 737 ops? I'll help you cherry pick a few more....Quito usually has blocked seats, maybe SNA in an 800, maybe Bogota here and there. Maybe a couple more I can't think of. Grand total probably 2% of total 737 flights. I'm sure the other 98% gets the job done. Should bigger aircraft be flying to Hawaii, probably, but that is the exception not the rule.

The once a year walmart leisure passengers probably don't care about interiors, but you can bet the more desirable frequent fliers and premium passengers do their homework and are very picky. We have to be on point and keep up with the competition who are offering more and more amenities.

I think the timing on buying more NG's is way, way off. Should have bought NEO's. 321's with big motors are a gigantic step up from 900ER's, and the 321 NEO is going to do an almost good enough imitation of a 757 for most airlines needs. 900ER's are an abortion by comparison.

As far as passenger experience there is very little difference. Yeah the old TV's hanging in the isle aren't that great. But neither are the little 12 inch LCD's, 3-4 rows up from you.

Both suck compared to an Airbus or 190 with 1 inch wider seats, and LiveTV for free like Jetblows.

Speaking of 321s, did you notice the Delta order? They did not wait for the neo version, they bought the old version. Same with American, they will be operating many non neo versions of narrowbody Airbus aircraft for years to come. Delta has something like 100 900ERs on order also. The competition will be playing the same game of trying to squeeze all they can out of whatever equipment they fly. I'll bet the AA pilots flying transcons in the new 321s are complaining high and mighty about how the 767-200 did all this and all that between the West Coast and JFK. In the grand scheme of things, the 321s will bring more to the bottom line and provide the customers with what many will view as a better product.

As far as 737s to Hawaii, Alaska seems to manage with nothing but 737s in the market.

It is extremely laborious to reach up and flip that switch. By the way, the 737 does have automatic gen switching under some circumstances.

My question (to Probe) was related to the entertainment. He seems to be under the impression that the Guppy does not have in seat tv. It does.

Personally, I wish we would take the ual 757's and bring them up to cal standards, with personal ife and updated cabin. It's a better plane than the 737, no doubt.

Being a guppy pilot...being an lax f/o...being one of the guys who DOES( did more before sli) HNL...I have never seen blocked seats on a 9 or 8 hundo ....full boat,full boat...full boat both ways. Period. OGG is another story...I have seen it blocked with 7-9 seats...but usually,not always, a phone call to load planning( IF they ANSWER) fixes it. Now, that being said...I'd buy a ticket on HA as well.:eek:

I rode in a 900 the other night EWR to DEN that had no entertainment system at all. Nothing. I guess it hadn't been retrofitted yet? This was not the first one I've been on that was sans TV in the back.

There are several 757-200's that have been upgraded to PS. However the majority of the 757's are slated for retirement. The fact that the 757 is a more capable airplane than any 737 is irrefutable. The fact that they are getting old and that Boeing builds nothing that replaces them is also irrefutable. Sad to say but the new generation Airbus narrow bodies are a decent replacement.

I think the 321 neo makes a lot of sense. Given that we already have sims, training program, and pilot, why not get some neo's? Maybe such an order is upcoming.

The 737's are not delivered with live tv. It is installed in MCO after the plane's go into service. I don't know what the time frame is, I just flew a 900 that is about 10 months old and it wasn't installed yet.
