Ewr 737 has the best flying in the system and I think many of the L-UAL guys have started to figure that out judging by the high seniority #s of the ones bidding into Newark.

The crews have been fantastic in Newark. I've only run across 2 guys that i would prefer not to fly with in the future. That's about par for the course.

I'd say that about half of my new hire class got the 76T in ORD. I think there are only one or two from my original class that have not returned yet. They are still flying overseas. But those of us that are back...I'd say 75% are now gonna be in the domiciles where they want to be / where we were furloughed out of.

Now I feel like my furlough is over. Now the movement has started that the UAL guys have been waiting for for over 10'years. I'm going to enjoy it while I can. No telling when it could turn south again!
I am wondering why the company is staffing so many people on the 76T? The latest CPU from EWR said that the plan is to park half of L-UAL 757 by the end of the year. It seems strange to me that if we are going to do this why did we have a bid for so many into that aircraft and 65 vacancies in EWR on it.

I probably shouldn't even try to figure out why management does anything around here.

It's good to hear that you got back to DC. The flying is great in EWR, but not worth a commute.

Just out of curiosity, it sounds like your newhires are going to the 75/76 in NYC and they have to cover all three airports. What does a commuter do? Are they looking at buying a car to get between the crashpad and any of the three airports? Or is the company responsible for getting you from one to the other? What if you started your trip in one and ended in another?
Did you ever get an answer? I read the thread twice. Maybe I still missed it. I know there is a $15 ish shuttle, but seems like United would run something...

That is one of the downsides to EWR (and DCA, LAX, SFO) as a base. You are responsible for trips out of all 3 airports your base serves (JFK/LGA/EWR) So, on the 737, A320, or 757/767 you can see trips out of the other airports. (pretty sure JFK has only 757)

If you are on reserve you can get assigned a trip out of any of the airports and you will have to find your own way there. So, you will either need the commuter car or be prepared to risk alot of Benjamins to get around.

There is extra pay for trips that start at either of the NY airports (but not EWR because it is now the "primary" airport) to cover small portion of the costs associated with tolls and what not. Below is the contract ref:

4-D-4 When a Trip originates and terminates at an airport that is not the primary airport of a Pilot’s Base, he shall receive a mileage allowance of twenty-nine cents ($0.29) per mile or the mileage rate found in Company policy, whichever is greater, for the actual performance of the scheduled trip calculated for the round trip driving distance between his Base airport and the airport at which the trip originates and terminates. Further, he shall receive twenty dollars ($20.00) per hour plus per diem set forth in Section 4-A-1, calculated using the applicable time listed in the table directly below. However, the provisions of this Section 4-D-4 shall not apply to Surface Deadhead between LGA/JFK and IAD/DCA.

Airport Pair Travel Time
EWR-LGA 1:30

EWR-JFK 1:30

The NY guys can better explain how that works for them but basically it is $30 plus mileage, so prob around $40ish extra for LGA or JFK trips.

If your trip starts in LGA and ends in EWR (or any other combination of starting and ending) the company will provide you transportation back to the starting airport as part of the trip. (I think you can then actually change to have the transportation on the front end if you would like, but again somebody else will have to weigh in on how that works).

Thank you GoCats. Good information.

Sounds like commuting from DFW could be a real pain. I could see getting moved to short call and catching a flight to EWR then having to fly out of JFK.

10 flights a day to EWR/2 a day to JFK/22 a day to LGA, so JFK would most likely mean the Airporter or ETS Airshuttle...

I've never done reserve in EWR but I have done it in both SFO and LAX. I was an F/O on the 777 in SFO back in 2000 on reserve for some of it and was on solid reserve as a Capt on the A 320 in LAX. Back in 2008 to 2010.

Covering multiple airports on reserve SUCKS! Especially if you are going to be doing it on new hire pay. It seems that the times you are going to get called to cover a flight at the most distant airport are always at 02:00 on short call. I had this happen several times in both SFO and LAX.

Getting a taxi from LAX to ONT at 03:00 will cost you just at $200 BTW same for an early morning run from the North Park, Burlingame to OAK to pick up a 777 from the maintenance hangar and fly it across the bay to SFO. Fortunately those days are over for the wide body guys as OAK is shut down.

Narrow body reserve at any of the multiple coverage bases is going to challenging for commuters.

My experience on reserve was SFO/OAK/SJC; I had a commuter car. They do have to pay for parking at all the airports you are responsible for.

The added expense of a commuter car takes a lot if stress out if the equation at those airports.

But they can start a 737 trip with a DH out of JFK. Ouch.

ETS shuttle between EWR and JFK is $35, desk at baggage claim, runs hourly.
Allcountyexpress.com for EWR to LGA, $32.

Almost did JFK once for a commute home, but missed the hourly shuttle.

Other option is NJT train, via EWR Airtrain to NJT stop, or pick it up near a crashpad, in my case. Ride to NY Penn, xfer to Subway to nearest stop an cab from there. Cheaper than shuttle but more of a hassle.

LGA trips are starting to show up in open time, so be aware of your options. The 2 that are in open time now are AM starts, around 7:45. I am thinking a solid 2 hours is safe for getting between two, obviously that is traffic depending.
