ONE row of seats. The airplanes were 12/132 previously.

Now they are 12/138.

That's 6 seats. ONE row.

I had heard the vendor was Panasonic, and they're failing miserably. I don't understand why we didn't just buy the system SWA uses right off the shelf, because it works great.

Because that is the way United has always done it.

United never, ever, just buys something off the shelf. They have to be the early adopter, and make some god-awful custom super-duper UAL only version. And in the end, they spent 10X as much, and it never works.

Think IPAD.

Sorry I read our CFOs statement that we were able to add 12 seats. Must not be the case.

SWA uses row 44, a satellite based service. If you read up on the rollout at SWA, it makes ours look like a perfect operation. Southwest was forced to apologize to customers for the first 18 months of operation as the system had huge reliability problems and very slow speeds. Now two years later they are up around 98% and starting to hit their stride.

Not defending Panasonic, just saying the grass isn't always greener. Satellite internet is an emerging technology and will have growing pains.

12/138 huh? That's six less than Skybus had on their 319's. There must be all kinds of room left ...

Yes satellite based aircraft internet. Although it has been only a few years since the home satellite internet has been able to get its speeds up to a respectable 12-15 mbs. Until then it was an awful 1.5 at best. I should know I was finally able to get rid of mine last month.

Congratulations! I know how backwards that was. Now if you could just teach 'ol UAL a few new tricks too...
