I heard a quote from a Boeing engineer I met.
"The perfect aircraft would be designed by Lockheed, built by Boeing, and marketed by McDonnell Douglas."
Maybe if they put a little wheel on the bottom of the new winglets, we won't scrape so many off.
Oh wait, didn't we try something like that recently on an approach into EWR?

Seems I recall at least two L1011 hull losses due to hydraulic system fires in the tail section--a Saudia flight that managed to land but burned on the runway, and a Pakistani jet lost in a hangar fire.
There are no perfect airplanes.
Not saying you're wrong, but the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that was a design problem was the hydraulic line placement that caused the UAL Sioux City mishap and even that might have been just a freak accident that could have happened to the L1011.
Doubtful it could have happened to a L1011. It had 4 hyd systems instead of 3 and one of them was fused to isolate the tail in case of a explosion in the number 2 engine. Hyd line routines were also split unlike the ten.

Boeing builds airplanes.
Douglas builds character.
Lockhead builds class.

The Saudi flight was a cargo fire in the aft cargo hold. The Captain took his time landing and even sent the FE back to confirm the smoke before turning back even though they had a aft fire cargo indication and the flight attendants reported smoke in the cabin. They landed with the pressurization in standby and the outflow valve closed for reasons not known. Took 23 minutes to get the first door open and all on board died.
There is no record of the Pakistani aircraft you mentioned however a L1011 burned in a hangar in Europe. The fire was started while welding the aircraft.

No dog in the fight, but I was riding BWI-DEN and they blocked 34 seat. United sent me over to American, so I don't know if the restriction was later lifted.
After flying it for the last three years, I have been weight restricted once due to approach climb limit/icing in DEN, 15 seats blocked, which was later removed at push. Also a couple times departing Quito. Other than that, never.
Never been weight restricted for an alternate, or even a short runway because they don't send 900s to runways less than 7000. The water cooler stories of 50 seats blocked are mostly bunk..maybe a Hawaii here or there, but those represent 1% of the operation.

Even IF it only represents 1% of the operation, that's one percent too much. Put the right plane on the right route and in the right market. That's a managerial task that these guys seem to fail with regularity.
That one percent represents thousands of pax and tons of cargo year out, year in. What a great way to run the operation. Lots of blown revenue, much of it never to return due to anger. Ten bucks says that any one of those bumped pax wouldn't have such a cavalier attitude and would vote with their wallet.
In response to squandered revenue, El Heffe wants to whack 2B in costs. Unless things start to turn, I submit that the'll be asking for concessions within the next 24 months. Right around the time we gin up for the next contract.
