Just my two cents:

I have been an LCA on more than a few airplanes over the years and it was my experience the UAL interns of the 90s were some of the easiest pilots to OE I had. The overall worst was an individual who had flown C5s in the reserves, but this was a single isolated case so it doesn't reflect on the rest with similar experience.

The most fun and challenging were the pilots whose flight time was mostly helicopter. But overall the hardest ones to teach how to land were the single seat fighter pilots. Something about the power to weight thing and understanding a B727 should not be landed in a crab during a cross wind.

With all that being said I find there is no single pilot new hire group which is either better or more professional than any other. The lowest time new hire pilot I OEd was around 800 hours, the highest was over 8,000 and they both did outstanding work.

Now did an intern somehow "cheat the system?" Nope they were actually taking advantage of every opportunity offered to them and if they didn't they shouldn't have been hired anyway.

Staller;
As usual, you are way out in left field. Now you are trying to say I am a racist and sexist? Where did that come from? Go back to your mega yacht.

Who am I? Nobody from nowhere. No daddy to pay for my college or make a few phone calls to get me a job. I just worked my tail off to get where I am, like most of us at UCH. Actually I got lucky and was able to start in the military after college. Most of my non-military brethren at UCH worked their tail off for peanuts flight instructing, flying cargo, corporate, or the hardest of all, flying checks in the middle of the night. Many did ALL of these. They earned the right to be here, or DAL, or AMR. They are not entitled 22 year olds who want to fast track their careers by working for free for a few years. H@ll, why not pay to fly? Oh yeah, that has already been tried.

Interns have no business on the UAL APC board, IMHO.

The moderators feel the same way about you Staller, that is why you currently go by Hopesales.

I think I have it now - You want to discredit others while including yourself with the many civilian/military pilots that worked very hard to get a job with United. I don't understand your hatred of the minorities, females, interns and son/daughters of United employees that got their jobs using the system available. This usually was no more than a simple recommendation and it normally only came into play after all qualifications were meet. Point of reference - many of these people worked as hard or harder than you to get the job.

Are you really a Legacy United pilot? If so - are you sure you didn't get lucky and fall though a crack? I guess what I'm trying to say is you seem to have everybody else's number - do you have your own?

So Probe, your hard work got you hired at United? You don't think being prior military had anything to do with you being hired and "jumping in front of the line"? Don't get me wrong, I feel military guys should get some special treatment, but so should interns.

Not all Interns get hired at 21 years old with 1000 hours. I am in my late 30s with 8000 hours most of it regional time. I've been out of college now going on 16 years, and I did my time. I am currently furloughed and desperately need a good job.

They whole point of this thread was me asking if being a UAL Intern will get you an interview. I believe the answer is no, it helps but networking gets you the interview. Unfortunately, I lost touch with everyone I worked with on my internship, didn't have the social media like we have today.

If anyone is willing to look up a few names for me in the UAL email system I'd be very greatful.

750,
PM me the names and I'll be more than happy. I'm not on these forums that much anymore for some individual reasons so sorry for the delay.

Special treatment is not slanted to one group. Networking is probably the most bias of all regardless of backgrounds. Being hungry and motivated is the only good "fault" to have and even then it may not work.

Are you for real?

Generalize and stereotype much? Clearly you've had a bad experience (or a hundred?) with a former intern. Fine. I absolutely understand that (especially early in the program) there were interns that were hired either too young or with too low of experience that were lousy to fly with and were undeserved of the opportunities given them. That said, I believe your condemnation of an entire group of individuals as having as you put it "no business" being a part of this is patently absurd and frankly makes you look like an ass.

I got hired just shy of my 22nd birthday, and I was an intern. Does that mean that I have no business being here? What had you done at that point in your life? I had just shy of 3000 hours, a college degree, had my ATP letter of competency since I was 19, had been flying 40-100 hours per month since the day after I turned 18, paid for my flying and most of college myself (my Dad, a '90 hired former Frontier yet junior United pilot that started over after 7 furloughs, a shutdown and a company bankruptcy was in no position to help.) I was flying and teaching competitive aerobatics on the side, flying checks when not at school and skydivers on the weekend in turbine equipment. What were you doing when you were 18-19?

I saw an opportunity and I took it. Clinton had shut down the military. Academy grads were getting banked. I worked for UAL for 3 months in the summer of 94 as an intern, made an impression and was hired in April 95 after a short stint at Eagle. Since then I've flown most of our fleets. Not a single blemish in my record. Awarded the 2007 ALPA Superior Airmanship Award for an event as a Captain in 96.

Do I still not make merit in your world? Many, if not most of the interns hired since 95 have spent plenty of time at the regionals to deserve a crapload more than the angst that you're serving up. You took advantage of the opportunities available, so did they.
