Disclaimer
Airhoss, does not necessarily endorse or recommend the use of bumping or the term "bump". Bumping is and always will be the result of poor planning from management. Bumps will be good for some and horrible for others. However having been through this and having been actually bumped 5 times previously while at UAL. I can honestly say with the utmost confidence that......
No matter what PC, corporate, synergy centric, name you want to you call it, surplus, base realignment, right sizing, strategic pilot alignment....Whatever. A bump is a bumps is a bump! Somebody is getting thrown out of their seat whether they want it or not. And this is the first time in my career that people have voluntarily bumped because it affords the opportunity for advancement for some, not 100% career regression. That is extremely unusual. And of course some folks are going to get bent over because of this, lets not forget them either. A case of the "UAL suxs" is coming down for some folks here no doubt.
My personal situation is kind of up in the air. I have no idea at the moment where I am going to wind up. Putting a finer point on it, not sure where and what I'm willing to put myself through for this company any longer. Time will tell.

I would have agreed with you a few months ago. Since we are keeping extra 757/767's around and getting guppies at an accelerated rate, the need to bump has been reduced.
Nobody is more surprised than me!
The fleet plan has changed, so the bumps that are coming have been reduced.
Shocking!

UAL was hiring massively right into the big furloughs of 1978 and 2001. Hiring moderately into the 08 furlough. Most other airlines did the same, including lCAL. Most other airlines also furloughed early to mid 90's. Somehow UAL managed to not furlough at that time.
Disclaimer: Hiring is great, right up to the point that it isn't.
Where do I sign up for another voluntary furlough?

In an effort to be as transparent as I can, I need to advise our IAH B737 Captains and First Officers that we expect there will be a sizable displacement on that fleet after summer. This is part of our work to align staffing levels with our flying in each base. It will likely impact a lot of pilots, whether by being displaced out of fleet and seat or by going from lineholder to reserve. I don't have any actual numbers yet, which will depend on our forecasted summer 2016 flying. As soon as we have numbers to share, we will do so.

On March 04, 2015, Herve Lavenant, Managing Director – Crew Resources, addressed the MEC. During Herve’s lecture, he reported that IAH was overstaffed on several equipment types in both Captain and First Officer positions. Specifically, he stated that IAH is overstaffed by 200 B737 Captains, 100 B737 First Officers and 40-50 B756/B767-300 Captains. Herve further indicated that he wants the overstaffing number at zero and displacements in IAH will begin after the 2015 Summer Schedule has concluded. During Q & A, Captain Ben Salley, LC 171 Chairman, commented that the Company was willing to mitigate the temporary overstaffing through TDY assignments. Herve’s response was that Pilots in other bases want that flying and he is going to deliver on their requests. Far too often we watch mid-level managers affect change in order to justify their being without fully understanding the ramifications of their actions. I would hope Mr. Lavenant realizes that 350 IAH Pilot displacements would result in secondary, tertiary, and quaternary displacements which could require several hundred training cycles and add an incredible strain on an already overtasked UAL Training Department. A Pilot who is displaced has far more rights than a Pilot who voluntarily bids to a vacant position. Please consider that point if vacancy bids are posted prior to any reduction bid. It is no secret that the operational cost basis, completion, and on-time statistics in IAH are more pro-business than that of any other United Domicile. Disturbing the successful contributions made by the IAH Pilots seems irrational and lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.
While Ben and I agree that IAH has more deadhead assignments at ID origination or termination, which might give a perception of overstaffing, we strongly disagree with Mr. Lavenant’s assertion that IAH is overstaffed by 350 Pilots. This year United will hire approximately 1000 Pilots and increase the fleet size through the acquisition of new B737 mainline jets. Furthermore, news sources have reported that United is actively seeking opportunities to purchase and/or lease used B737s and A319s and retain usage of B757s, B767s, and Airbuses previously reported as retirements from the current fleet. Additionally, through mandatory retirements, United will lose 382 Pilots in 2015 and 371 Pilots in 2016. Any perceived staffing excess would easily be corrected, in less than a year, through aircraft acquisition and manpower attrition without the need for displacements. Herve, your data makes NO SENSE.
