Guppy is an improvement. My dad was a controller when the 737 rolled out and for the first decade at least he claims it was referred to as a FLUF (Fat Little Ugly #%#ker) by the whole industry, at least the FAA.
That should blow some minds in today's PC world.

To my recollection the 737 was called the "Hoover" when came to CAL. The -300 was the "super hoover".

Don't know where TK came from originally but it's short for DENTK. Maybe one of the United historians will come up with it's logic or if it makes you feel better, you can make up your own.

DENTK came about because United has a nemonic address system
and DENTKs' SITA address is TK "DENTKUA" (though we rarely use Sita internally anymore.. WAY Back when? before E-Mail became popular Sita was how airlines got messages from place to place. kinda like Western Union. So? San Francisco's Maint Center is "SFOOVUA" (OV for overhaul) FT was used for Freight rather than Flight training) Everything was based on a SITA address..
FYI

And TK meant TicKeting. Wasn't the building an old ticketing center? That's how it was explained to be by a long time UAL pilot.
