Well again I simply disagree. Nothing I have ever written was contrary to union desires or policy. In fact in nearly every instance the issue is either a violation of our contract or a grossly abusive interpretation, and just as you claim the company can say Peckesque letters don't support the union position the company can just as easily say "No one has filed a single complaint about trading so there must not be a problem."
Politics, business, and life are complex. Rarely does one shoe fit all. Telling folks that the only way to voice their concerns about their job is through the union is like telling someone to fight with one hand tied behind their back. Most of us know what the union position is and I would hope we all do our part to advocate that position when we interact with our managers. When ALPA starts hiring pilots and sending them paychecks then maybe we can all stop interacting with our managers and just go through the union for all our concerns. In the meantime your position is almost laughably naive. Btw, I never said not to interact with management, just don't put it in writing. You want to walk into your chief pilots office and verbally shed crocodile tears, have at it. Preach on reverend Joe. |

I'd rather have OUR union representing my interest than having an individual pilot setting a precedence that others will be expected to follow. |

Great Post!! I couldn't agree more!! The two things that you're dealing with though is paranoid and hot headed pilots! I've had the same experience as you. Not that all problems were solved but occasionally they were taken care of. I know I went to the IAH road show that all the Managers came to where pilots expressed many issues to Greg Hart and his people. All I can say is that within days many off those issues were addressed! (i.e.- less 4-day trips, etc.) Just saying, if you keep it professional I've NEVER had an issue.

Sunvox, I hate to keep riding on your "coattails" but you are doing a GREAT job of stating what I wish MORE pilots would do!! I also worked in the ALPA office for 3 yrs and wish people would "grow a pair" and take some of the minor issues into their own hands. PDR's are a Great resource, some of the reason we have them is because there is a % of the pilot group that doesn't feel comfortable talking to Mgt. for lack of trust issues!! (some well deserved!) As far as independent contractor I guess that must be a new "merger catch phrase!" so I can't comment on that since all my independent dealing with Mgt were personal issues that may help all pilots in the future! And Special T I gave you an example of talking to Mgt directly about 4-day trips! I filled a PDR on said issue no response then went to road show and heard everyone complain about this issue! Greg H. said is this really that big of an issue WE said yes and the problem was fixed in next bid packet!! It's politics ST, both ALPA and the Company want to take credit that THEY fixed the problem I KNOW I saw it all the time when I worked in there! (sort of sad) But, my bottom line is I don't care who fixes it as long as it gets fixed!!;)
I can't wait to find out what kind of letters you guys write during section 6 openers. |

Independant contractor? You know, like the one who goes out and independently demands less 4 day id's when commuters might actually like them.

YES, but it wasn't just me it was about 8-10(with larger % of room agreeing!) pilots in room! However, I do understand why paranoid people like you would think "it's just a coincidence"!!

I know man. At least now there is a 9 seniority trade as well. (3,7,9,11AM + 3,7,9,11PM). You would think they would put one at 10 instead then open it up to reserves at 11 but that might make too much sense. They could run it every 5 minutes if they wanted to. Contract says that it has to be run at least every 4 fours. Doesn't specify a maximum.
If it makes you feel any better it will happen again! Kidding as I have missed many a trip like this I was told that trip trades take a lot longer than just five minutes. The system takes something like up to an hour to process through all the bases, at least that is the longest run I was told they've experienced. As a result of months of seeing it in action, the company finally agreed with the union and was comfortable adding another run at 0900. A run at 1000 sounds like it would be too close if something went wrong. |
Just pdr'd another trip trade. This time i have a 3 day (lets call it e1234) on 10/1-10/3 (wed-fri)....trying to drop or even just try for a trip a day or two earlier..."no coverage". My bes currently has 3 open trips the entire month of October!
What will happen next: Sunday@1005:someone will call in sick for a 3 day (e1234) that starts on Monday. Sunday@1008: I get scheds on the line and say "hey kind sir i'd like to trade into e1234" for tomorrow. Sunday@1008: scheduler says: "you know, i wish i could help you out but we are not able to do those kinds of trades anymore" Sunday@1735 ive finally cooled down, my team won and the beers are cold. Tuesday@0727: i click on the "submit" button at the bottom of the "sick call" page because my kids our more important to me than just about anything. |

You are correct. I think the point Sunvox was trying to make was that the COMPANY and NOT ALPA causing the trade problems.
Stopping the special deals for the choose few is good and ALPA did that. I have had zero success moving days off since the implementation of the seniority trip trade process. Under the old system with bad day worse day trading I could usually make a trade work. I'd gladly give the trip trade mafia back their thievery for that. |
