Default LA-based pilots...

What's the farthest south it is reasonable to sit short call reserve from? I'm looking to (eventually) move south of Pendelton, around Oceanside/Carlsbad/Encinitas. I'm sure traffic and time of day plays a big role in drive times, but does anyone have any experience living in this area and sitting reserve?

Lived in San Clemente. The problem is I-5/405 route. Rush hour is from 6-10 and 2-7. Plus I-5 is a single point of failure as everything funnels down to this one freeway south of Disneyland. I suggest you use google maps to see realtime TO FROM drive times at various times of day. My brother lives in Vista. It can be done.

I live and sell real estate in South Orange County. If you decide San Diego County is to far let me know if I can help with your home search.

Worst ever for me was 3 hours from Jamboree in Irvine to the employee lot.

Ouch. My parents lived in Lake Forest. Never saw it take that long.

The Waze app is your friend. I usually budget 2 hours from home to crew lounge from Lake Forest. During rush hour I add 30 minutes depending on the day. I have had it take the full 2.5 hours just to drive but that happens maybe once every year. The last time it happened I fired up Waze and it said to go up to the 91W via the toll road and a bunch of other crazy routes. Of course I thought the app must be broken and hopped on 405 which turned out to be a parking lot. Moral is to believe the app.

When I lived in San Clemente I sat on a 1.5 hour call out which was cutting it too close.

There are a large number of pilots that live in north San Diego county and south riverside county. It is easily doable. Draw a 130 mile radius circle around lax and that should work

Well, the UPA does say 2.5 hours WITH consideration given for traffic. I'd head out to a SC and after 2.5hrs, call the crew desk and let them know you are in traffic.

I live in Coto de Caza, fairly far South in Orange County and It has never taken me over 2:15. That being said, if you have an 8:00am show you might want to get there by 7:00 so you aren't in the worst of rush hour. We recently bought a lot in Temecula with the intent of building a home, it is about 100 miles to LAX. I quickly came to the conclusion that traffic on th 91 would make this a commute that I didn't want to do so we won't move there until we are close to retirement. A lot of guys do th inland commute, but I would stay away from anything that has you on the 91. If you are looking for a larger property, consider places like Fallbrook and Bonsal, it's a long drive but it is on the 5/405.

Took 2:40 to get from O'side to the CPO two trips ago. Sunday night red eye. Sunset along I-5 (it's more west than I thought it was) had traffic slow moving from Pendleton through San Juan Capistrano. D Lot parking shuttle bus was stuck in traffic for a long time due to airport terminal gridlock. Started flight planning on the bus because there simply wasn't enough time to do so in the CPO. I gave myself 3 hours door to door.

Found a place in South Bay this weekend. After a late night post 4 day trip drive home to O'side last week, I threw in the towel.

It's doable, just not for me. I know a 737 FO who commutes from Coronado.

The farthest south I'd recommend living is San Clemente.
