Boats or not; flying behind a prop will move you closer to an airline job than driving a boat, unless its an airplane on floats which is pretty cool. :-)

Agree with others. The best you can do is break even. Wait.

Be careful with unnecessary check rides if you have a perfect record. Some examiners make CFI rides like a shuttle launch and others are out there failing a certain percentage. I believe your first CFI ride has to be offered to the fsdo and then you can go to a DE.

This is correct, although he's already done the mil equivalent for the MEI as I understand it so from here out its just add-on ratings. CFI ride you're expected to be almost perfect, they're sending you out to teach. For a very long period of time the MCO FSDO had a <20% pass rate.

OP, just wait. There's nothing you need any of that stuff for right now, and hooking an FAA check ride just prior to showing up would not be a career enhancing move.

Thanks again for the words and advice - I'm going to hold off. While it's true it wouldn't be my initial (already have MEI and IA), common sense would definitely say why bother risking it right now. After reading some of these responses I think my biggest concern isn't poor performance leading to a failure, but those unknown what ifs that could come up - like the story about the mx issue mentioned earlier in the thread.

It's funny, but my biggest motivation to adding the SE to my CFI certificate is so I can teach my son to fly when he's old enough. He's 2 right now... I think I have some time!!

Don't hold off too long. If you don't get it done in the next year or two, it'll get a lot harder to stay motivated...
