A UAL jumpseater is not part of the BOW of the aircraft. However they can not be denied boarding due to an over weight situation, and revenue would have to be removed. FOM 10.30.3

Well, since this thread is alive again here's a question I've been wondering about. About how many airframes/routes are needed to open a viable widebody base?

In a different thread, Ugleeual mentioned that Denver might make a nice 787 base. I actually think it would too, but the only 787 international route out of there that I know of is to NRT (or WB intl for that matter). The field performance, modest size, and range of the -8 would fit DEN fairly well. Not nearly as much O&D traffic as our other hubs, but DEN is a great hub for transfers (far better than any other except perhaps IAH).

I'm not saying DEN is big enough right now to open a WB base of any sort. But if we do manage to expand NB flying there, I'm wondering if there is a tipping point at which a WB base becomes feasible. Thoughts?

Denver was listed on another thread as being the number three hub by passenger count... I think it's inevitable that a WB base reopens in Denver...

Working against a future widebody base in Denver is the fact that domestic /Hawaii flying offers a good way for other bases to get landing currency doing turns or thru flights as part of domestic pairings.

The last pure widebody based in Denver was the DC10 I believe. (The 767 base was mostly 757 flying). So until there is sufficient international flying, I doubt there will be a widebody based in Denver just for domestic flying.

True, but the 767/57 fleet was never considered "wide body" at the former UAL.

Since the DC10 left DEN there were a few times when the contractural calculation (yes there was a clause in the contract at one time to calculate the need for a base) would have allowed or required a "wide body" base (777) in DEN, but the ALPA politics would not support such a move. Why, you might ask?

The answer is for wide body to come to DEN would mean a reduction in another base (SFO or LAX in the day) and no Council would support reduction in flying from their base.

The only consistent "wide body" flying now in DEN is the 787 DEN - NRT flight and that has swapped between IAH and SFO with IAH claiming it the most often.

For the 787 to be based in DEN these days it would require, in addition to NRT, say HNL and additional domestic to work.

When they "double deck" the follow-on to the MAX-guppy, it could be a widebodyish plane.
