The trips aren't very exciting though. It is mostly 2-4 day trips with the bulk of the layovers in EWR, ORD, SFO. Very rarely will a Hawaii trip come up. If it does you can figure a line holder will try to swap his 2 day EWR for the Hawaii trip. If that doesn't happen plan for any senior reserve to put in a pick up request.

Huggy....you would be mistaken. The 737-900er with the slim line seats hold 12 additional passengers then a 757-200 while costing ~20% less then a 757-200 to operate.
Of cours you have to weight restrict most of those 12 seats and you can't carry the cargo....but on paper it looks good. The previous poster could have been referring to 757-300 or 767-300.

The -900 comes in four flavors.
V1/V2 = 20F/51E+/96E = 167 pax
V3 = 20F/42E+/117E = 179
V4 = 20F/39E+/120E = 179
The 757-200 domestic (I'm not listing Intl and PS because they're unlikely to use those variants for Hawaii)
24F/50E+/108E = 182
How often is the -900 weight restricted on Hawaii flights? I don't know the answer but I know that it happens on occasion.
The 757-200 would be a wash, although we wouldn't have denied boardings. The 757-300 and 767 are larger. Besides, we've already got some 777s flying into HNL.

Ironically the 737-900ER CASM are not significantly lower than a 757-200. According to http://www.aircraft-commerce.com/sam...g_2_sample.pdf the CASM of the 757-200 is about 7.85 and the 737-900ER 7.31 cents.
Considering the route flexibility of the 757 when compared to the 737 one wonders why many of the UAL managers think it's the best thing since sliced bread.
The only real answer, and the leaders of the industry seem to agree, is there really wasn't a replacement for the aging 757-200 fleet and Boeing only offered the -900ER in the near term.
What I find most interesting is on a CASM basis (according to the PDF) the A321-200 is the airplane to go with. But, when your management has made a deal with Boeing to keep it (the airline) in the air a bit longer Airbus wasn't considered. Of course this Kirby guy and the fact the Boeing deals (with Jeff S) seem to be history maybe there will be an order for some Airbuses in United's future.
However, for us working pilots remember the mantra, "bid what you are willing to fly and fly what you bid!"
***Please note***
Seating in the back of a full 757-200 to Hawaii is no different than doing the same in a 737. It's just more likely standbys will get on the 757.

That salt water guppy have an HMG or whatever that thingy is called?
IOW, there's more to it than how many seats are jammed in there. Just think, if it had drop tanks we could fly 'em to Europe!
