I'm personally ok with extensions like we did. It worked out pretty damn well for the vast majority. Nobody got screwed with our extension. Reserve commuters didn't get any gains, but we didn't give anything back like the company wanted either. We all got one vote and a very large majority happen to agree. It was the largest majority I've seen since Contract 2000.

In reality the call out was only shortened by 30 minutes. Old contract was unwritten 4 hours to push. Now it's 2:30 to show. Certainly 30 minutes in certain hubs can help certain folks though.
The excessive short calls built at crew desk discretion is the biggest complaint I hear about the reserve system. Basically there is no long call part of the long call/short call system. It's like the old days when all it was, was short call That needs to get fixed.

I understand the SC issue for commuters. I agree we need to get it addressed or at minimum restrictions for building them in black and white, but for locals the SC system is a HUGE benefit. I know many making bank and never flying by doing as many SCs as they can get. So are we going to rob from Peter to pay Paul? Don't you think the locals will be upset if it's changed too much and say you're taking money out of their pockets to appease the people that chose not to take the companies offer of a paid move to live in base? Just bringing up the other side. I don't have the answer.

True on the 4 hrs. Forgot that was to push.

I hear ya.
My retort to those complaining about fewer unused SC's that pad the paycheck is the same for those complaining that they aren't flying the 767-400 (a constant EWR vs IAD issue). You get paid a guarantee. Anything on top of that is variable, and subject to the whims of the company. (Be it the number of SC's created or what domicile flies the 767-400 on what routes). If you want the higher paycheck then bid a line (though many lines over the winter pay less then reserve but can always try to trade into more work), or the 777.
I do wish the company would build pure short call lines (say at a higher guarantee 76-78 hours??) for those that want them. Bid on them in PBS.

I've was a new hire straight into the 756 fleet. Pretty much everything people have said is accurate. 1 1/2 years on reserve, although I'm lax based now. If I was in Sfo I would maybe hold a line. One thing I will add though is if you get the 737 and really don't like it and decide you would rather for some reason sit reserve on the 756, then you can bid up to it. You CANNOT bid down to the 737 if your on the 756 for 2 years though. Big advantage to go 737 or airbus.

I also wish we had some sort of holiday pay. My gut instinct thinks it would seriously help with reserve coverage. On my fleet the company winds up paying our big SRM/PPU $$$$ every Christmas/NYE/Thanksgiving etc. How many would work if that one day paid 100% add pay vs the company paying 3-4 days of add pay to cover entire trips? The company is paying it one way or another. Just this morning there was a PPU trip in open time for my fleet/seat. Trip popped into open time at 4am for an 11am takeoff. No SC available to cover it. Super Bowl Sunday. Imagine that lol.

No way management will pay holiday pay... all days are treated equally in an operation that runs 24/7 365 days a year.
However, I'm all for the monthly SC lines being built/bid and paid at a higher guarantee (78+ hours) and/or a combo with more days off in the month.

Pay is really a non issue also the first couple years... so enjoy yourself and start by flying the line.

I'd bid 737 at your base of choice and then get your feet wet actually flying a jet for United. You can always bid to a higher BES ANYTIME after your hired... so why tie your hands with a 756 on day 1 if given the choice? Fact is that you will be a line holder on the 737 much quicker... if you bid 756 you will always be the bunkie (never touch the yoke) and on reserve for a year/two at best.
