Before someone gives you the useful, "it sucks," speil...
ONT:
75/76 only domicile. 105 FO's, 40 from this hiring wave (2014 onwards), 4 guys from 2018. Another 40 are guys from 2005-2007. The rest are mid 90's hires.
On the captain side, 118 total. Most are 90's hire, 11, including the plug are 2005 hires.
A little over 10 lines of 5 to 6 on and 10 off type things with mostly morning flying (start around 5am finish at noon flying on the W. Coast).
10+ lines of week on/off nite sort flying.
Just under 10 lines of Asia based international flying in a 2 week on/ off scheme. Another 7 or so of less clean intl lines.
20 something lines of a mixed bag of stuff. Most have stuff every week but offer weekends off. Lot's of reports, 2-3 day trips. Doesn't look commuter friendly at all.
Almost no Vacation/training lines.
Just under 10 lines of A Reserve, mostly 4-6 day blocks but a couple of 2 week on/off lines.
About the same with B and C reserve.
4 lines of airport standby lines.
Hope this helps a little. I'll let the ONT guys provide further commentary,
FTFF

Commuting to ONT...I think I've searched every thread I could find.
Looking to see current info and though it's only 1 reply this is the best thread it seems on ONT. ONT has about 4-7 flight a day from my house on SWA, UPS, etc. It would only be about 1:20 to fly in.
In other threads, it looks like the flying is so bad guys commute all the way to ANC even through they can drive to work, which must make it pretty bad. Is that still a trend?
How quickly are new guys getting off reserve, and are the lines generally commutable with the info I posted above? (I know it might change).
Finally, there are 2-3 flights a day on UPS to SDF, but only on UPS, and it's a little longer at about 4 hours. Anyone new (or even those who have been around a while) care to share your decision on bidding ONT vs. SDF with numbers similar to those above?
One thing I'm still trying to understand is that guys post about work blocks rather than trips quite a bit when referencing schedules. I assume people go home in between individual trips, but some of the posts make it seem like you're on duty for the whole work block. Does that interfere or prevent commuting somehow?
Any info would help.

They were at one point, and they probably still are, taking advantage of contract langage we have mitigating the fatiguing effects of overnight duty periods. By using West coast based crews on west coast body clock and duty times, UPS flowed them into Louisville for blocks of work out East. This allowed them to bypass duty limits and other contractual provisions otherwise offered to SDF crews flying the same nights. Made for some unpleasant and fatiguing trips.
ANC is a different animal. Base is away from the mothership so more laid back. Crews are pretty cool, flying is almost entirely international. It’s almost like a different company up there. People live in SDF and still commute to ANC for those and other reasons. So I wouldn’t say ONT bailed for ANC as they could have gone to SDF just as easily.
This is a commuter friendly airline, for the most part. Live where you want to live. Might be unpleasant when you’re super junior but once you get some bodies below you and learn how to game the system a little you’ll find most commutes are doable.

Don’t plan on being able to hold anything other than reserve or base trip lines for at least 2 years on Z. I switched out after 18 months...I was four from the bottom. Anything good obviously goes senior and the Z is very senior.

Hello all. I am super excited to have been offered a CJO and currently live close to ONT. Due to my previous airline I was planning on buying a house in LAS and not sure how my QOL would be living in LAS and commuting to ONT as a new hire? I can afford more house in LAS for the growing family however would I improve my QOL greatly by staying close to ONT? I understand that I may not get ONT out of training however the plan is to transfer there with time. Thanks.
