Commuting as a UPS pilot
#341
That being said...there currently aren't many Sunday or Monday AM departures from domicile. There are trips that start with a deadhead from domicile on those days, but lineholders can deviate (ie. not take the "as-scheduled" deadhead). There are a number of Sunday/Monday PM departures which again, could require an offline commute or positioning earlier than preferred on a Browntail.

It could, requiring an offline commute to SDF or positioning on a Browntail earlier than preferred. If you are a commuter starting a RSV block, you *must* be in position prior to your RSV block starting - no arriving at 0005 local for a RSVA on-call period starting at 0000 local.

Same thing on the back end of trips. Miss the 4am sat am outbounds and you are on your own way home until Sunday late afternoon, if you’re lucky, otherwise you’re waiting until Tuesday early am to get out of dodge on a brown tail.
Again, trips that typically go junior have starts/finishes in these brown tail shadows.
Solution: CC with miles - use them to buy tickets when you get stuck. Or non rev if you like the stress and uncertainty.

Being junior and a commuter you will definitely feel this. Often you’ll be holding an ok line for your seniority. When you look at the details it’s usually because it starts in one of these weekend brown tail shadows. Reserve A’s that start Sunday am (0000L) require taking a Friday night brown tail into sdf costing an entire day off unless you use pax carriers.

This is the solution I chose. From the point of view of making this job super easy, it’s awesome! Does Indiana offer great veterans benefits for college if you have kids..yes! Is the Louisville area a terrible place to live…no. Would I rather live somewhere else…yes. Life is a balancing act and right now living in domicile makes a lot of sense.
Nothing says the choice you make to minimize the pain of juniority has to be permanent.
