Between the retirements and growth airframes happening now. Then we transitioning to 300+ retirements in the next 4-5 years; I’d say we will be understaffed (possibly severely understaffed) for the next 10 years. New hire classes of 19/month isn’t going to cut it. Every trip trade I’ve submitted has been denied due to insufficient reserve coverage and every day off I get 3-5 JA calls. There needs to be a major investment in the training centers ability to increases capacity. How are they going to train 300+ new captains and the new hires needed to maintain the airline?

I had a discussion with a manager about the new training center. I asked why it couldn’t be bigger and have everything necessary for training ala AA center in DFW. Could have a fire pit, cafeteria(although I preferred eating across the street), pool for actual ditching practice and extra sim bays for future growth.

he said he actually took a guy from ATL and showed him Cathay’s training center and how they could rent out rooms to other companies for meetings etc. he was told we will never have anything like that at UPS.

Pretty much proven when the new center didn’t even have bathrooms at the initial design.

A Hurstbourne UPSCO part-121 "fast feeder" manager or an actual Atlanta-based UPS executive?

A SDF airline manager took an Atlanta based corporate manager. Higher up the food chain than a SDF guy.

I agree, but that’s not my point. My point is, they need to figure out a way to increase training capacity and get more bodies through training.

We have more sims, classrooms, and instructors than we had 3 years ago, but training capacity has actually dropped. So yea, who knows...

More pilots = more CQ events, more instructors needed, more sims, etc...

Until the boxes stop moving there is no need for them to change anything. That’s how this place works.

Building the reserve recovery lines for nearly every fleet due to MEF in a couple bid periods may get somebody’s attention.
