July class here. My unit is touting a possible 5-day activation first weekend in August (Thu-Mon) and then again third weekend in Sept (Sat-Sun). Is that something the training schedule can absorb or do I need to either try to get excused or talk to HR about slipping start date?

Don’t slip the class date, period. Any given unit is not dependent on a single member for mission success. Your family’s future is about as secure as it can be at UPS....you can drill anywhere to get your reserve retirement; if you can’t get out of some 5-day activation.

You aren’t choosing for your unit to pull this. If it does happen, that’s out of your control and the company will work with you. Don’t give up a bird in the hand and a seniority number just because your unit is thinking about doing something. The company won’t want to hear about it until it’s a sure thing. From their perspective there is always some unit somewhere thinking about a mandatory drill weekend, unexpected activation, etc. They can’t plan based off of it and you shouldn’t fall on your sword over it.

Agree. Take the class, get a seniority number and deal with the issue later. We have a fantastic military liaison (line captain) who might be able to give you good advice.

PM SaltyDog on here..
