Im assuming total tails will shrink slightly, at least in the short term.

From internal forums (MIA thread): some manager pilots have be quoted as saying possible realignment bid after peak and no hiring first part of 2024 but possibly later part of year to cover for peak. YMMV

I think I and others have said this repeatedly. It's obvious this will happen right after peak. Mostly, if not all will be off the MD. They are fat on the MD and will be parking more (PW) in 2024. Move bodies to 747 and 767.

I have a sneaking suspicion that we may be surprised how they manage the MD retirement. The bodies may not move elsewhere quite as fast as many expect. All that said, I’m just conjecturing and definitely have no unique insights.

For someone that got hired 2/2020 when do you think will be the earlier upgrade to captain?

Impossible to determine with any level of accuracy...upgrade time depends on pilot group/fleet size (ie. growth or contraction), block hours, and attrition.

That being said, the junior CPT award is generally around 60-65% overall seniority and Feb 2020 hires are about 72% overall seniority so I'd guesstimate mid-2026 (give or take a year) for first available upgrade opportunity.

This prognostication is worth exactly what you paid for it, caveat emptor, semper gumby.

As someone slightly senior to you (who thought he would have held upgrade already based off of friends a year senior to me who upgraded almost two years ago), the lesson I’ve learned/been reminded/etc is that you can’t count that upgrade chicken until you’ve flown that first revenue leg. It’s frustrating, but that’s life. On the other hand, you could be a captain at United by March.

The last couple of bids they were well senior to that. More like mid-1800s.

It varies bid-by-bid, depending on the number of CPT positions available. Small realignments aren't going to move the needle junior the way larger bids will, especially if they come after a lack of movement and bypassers jump in.

Looking back to when Contract 2016 was ratified, the plug is (generally) in the 60-65% range upon award. As an example, the CPT plug for 23-101 was 58% overall seniority, 21-103 was 62%, 19-102 (which established SDF 747 and created extraordinary movement) was 72%. Of course that was during a significant growth phase for the airline and demographics have changed, so we'll see what the future happens to hold.
