If only it were “A few bucks pay…”

Oh the naivety and ignorance.

IMHO, this attitude, this willingness to settle for less in exchange for being in the PNW, is exactly why Alaska finds itself where it is now, so far behind the rest of the industry.

God help you guys and gals.

There will be no contract before summer. The company will do just enough to keep us out of any cooling off period. The summer will be a complete disaster and nobody is going to buy us. Ever since I was hired there has always been a rumor that we would get bought. This fall the company will reinstate the stock dividend because you know "we have to protect the investors." The final kick to the nuts will be the large bonuses paid out to upper management for the difficult year that they persevered through.

Even though we are an airline and only have one reason for being in business (flying airplanes) the company will never look at us other than a problem to be managed and taken advantage of. It will not get better. The good news is I'll be taking 20 days off each month this summer via 3rd step because after more than 23 years at Alaska I still can't hold a summer vacation.

Best of luck to us.
Years ago, I remember when they first started eliminating summer vacations, it was right after BM had returned from metrics school at Harvard. Someone wrote into the water cooler lamenting that they used to have summer vacation and asked when would they be coming back. Greg Haige (sp?) from Pilot Resource Management answered, basically telling this pilot that if they wanted summer vacation that they needed to quit and change careers. The reply lasted about 15 minutes before TK had it pulled down from the website

Once they realize you're willing to cave on "a few bucks pay," they realize that you'll be willing to cave on everything else, too.

If you guys had to choose b/w Spirit and Alaska Air which would you choose?

I live in Atlanta and Spirit is opening up a base there on August 1st. It's a lot less pay but I'd be living in base. The main reason I ask is that per the forum on here the contract w/ Alaska Air is not the best and a lot of pilots are leaving for Delta, United, etc...

How is that even a choice if you live in and plan to stay in Atlanta, go to Spirit.

You're still here.

All the tough talk in the world, and you aren't leaving, tied by the hands of the seniority system.

It's okay, that's my reason for staying too. At least I'm honest about it though. You'll be miserable the rest of your career - I choose not to be.

Do not commute ATL-SEA for Alaska.

For them, this type is the perfect candidate.
You collectively should be asking yourself just how many of these types has Alaska already hired. How many 92%-ers?
Of recent hires, the ones who know better have already left or will soon leave.
In the end, you will be left with more of these settle for less types.
Therein lies your future.
You may get a contract, win the battle but lose the war.
