Maybe they were running between terminals for scheduled 45 minute turns and didn't want to icebreaker their way through a crowded jetway of people completely drenched in sweat. Sometimes you have to take it off and let the heat sink cool off.

That is why they call it a "sweat" band. If you are hot, I see nothing wrong with getting down to your "Wife Beater", the folks will understand. (The 88 crowd.)
