Future AA new hire classes

Any insight or wild guess if AA is reconsidering to cancel or postpone future classes? I believe there are 3 starting in March.

We have to keep hiring to keep up with retirements.

fifidriver 03-01-2020 01:28 PM

That's true. But, would someone be crazy to leave an LCC such SWA, Alaska, JetBlue or Spirit to start at AA in 3 weeks with all this Coronavirus panic worldwide?

Relatively speaking, UA has a similar amount of retirements don't they? They do have a lot more pacific widebody flying though.

Just a hunch, but I'd imagine if UA is canceling classes, everyone else will start with that and evaluate where that puts them in the coming days/weeks.

By not holding classes we are effectively furloughing 70 people a month. It sucks to shrink but I am hopeful we will all be able to hold onto our jobs. I've run into a handful of new hires on OE lately.

Not quite same number of retirements. AA shows ~770 and UA ~ 350 for 2020.

I think we have more than twice as many retirements than United this year. I believe APC says ~366 retirements as United this year versus ~772 here at American. We are little bigger than UAL but not twice as big.

Not hiring for a year would shrink the list by 6-7%.

The airline could easily shrink 10% in this debacle now. Parking all the E190's, 767's, some 757's and deferring 787/max return.

The 737 and baby bus fleet needs heavy maintenance anyways.

Wait what? Why would AA slow hiring due to a virus? Aren’t there about 800 retirements this year? A thousand next year?

Yes, that is a valid point but... UA was planning to hire ~1200 in 2020 also. Just saying saying that a lot could change in the next month or eve 2 weeks. Hopefully this will be forgotten by most by the end of March.
