What does that mean in terms of hiring? Will AA need 400ish newhires to fill up those vacancies then?

No. Thats their "forecast" for how many pilots they want to staff the operation at that time, so that should include however many new hires they think they will need to cover retirements.

Where are you getting this information from? That’s completely incorrect. There are currently 13348 pilots on property. There will another 271 retirements between now and the end of this year. So WITHOUT hiring we’ll be at 13077 at the end of 2021. It’s not difficult to figure out that with retirements continuing, in March 2022 we’ll be at 12884. Again that’s without hiring.

The staffing at AA is a mystery. We will see a lot of new hires in the next year. The actual number is anyone’s guess. We have vacancies where 30 openings are posted and they award 10 or 60. It’s a crap shoot. AA has a lot of retirements coming up. If we plan to be the same size, massive hiring will have to occur.

Thank you for that. I wonder what the plan is in the short term, with both UAL and DAL with actual newhire classes either scheduled or ongoing. I bet AA will lose a lot of people who had it as their first choice since there’s usually a fair amount of overlap between folks with CJOs from the big 3.

AA already announced 300 new hires for fall 2021, and 600 for 2022. There are rumors that those numbers reflect the low end of the hiring spectrum, with COVID recovery (or lack thereof) liable to adjust those numbers. That announcement has been discussed on this forum already.

What sort of “short term plan” are you looking for beyond that?

Short term as in the next 3-4 months. Just wishful thinking on my part, but I was wondering if maybe this vacancy announcement could mean earlier newhire classes.
