Vacancy announcement
#71
The staffing at AA is a mystery. We will see a lot of new hires in the next year. The actual number is anyone’s guess. We have vacancies where 30 openings are posted and they award 10 or 60. It’s a crap shoot. AA has a lot of retirements coming up. If we plan to be the same size, massive hiring will have to occur.

Retirements in the next 20 years:
Remember some of those out years numbers will increase as some of the new hires will be older, thus reach mandatory retirement age before 2040.
Further, my crystal ball says in 2040 AA will have grown. So, more hiring will be required.

As reference, 2018, the biggest hiring year, was 939 new hires. (2019 was a bit less. All the Mad Dog retirements caused the school house to be jammed with retraining, slowing new hires.)

AA already announced 300 new hires for fall 2021, and 600 for 2022. There are rumors that those numbers reflect the low end of the hiring spectrum, with COVID recovery (or lack thereof) liable to adjust those numbers. That announcement has been discussed on this forum already.
What sort of “short term plan” are you looking for beyond that?

Yeah, Dallas too apparently. Mentioned it in a different thread, but I just flew with a (737) FO that credited over 180 hours in March. There's premium all over the place for those that want it. We're still fat on the CA side in NYC, but I expect things to change over the summer - I've moved up over 20 spots since prior to covid, but nobody is filling in at the bottom.

Schoolhouse working hard to get pilots recertified. Hard to get simulator time to qualify pilots for different metal, as they came off airframes that were retired (5 of 9 types, but only 10% of total airplanes). Cannot keep up with growing PAX loads. Even after all get back flying, needing to hire for those who took early retirement and those hitting 65.
Maintenance is stretched, as well. Trying to do heavy checks for all those planes parked in the desert.
