“Holiday” pay.
From LOA 22-01:
7. Holiday Pay: The below holiday blocks shall be designated as permanent premium pay days. Any *flying* performed on a day in that block, including as a result of a Reschedule, Replacement Flying (for Replacement Flying performed on the holiday block for a sequence which did not originally touch the holiday block), Self-Repair, or Reassignment, shall pay a premium of one hundred percent (100%) over the pilot’s base hourly rate (over guarantee for reserves). The Company will not allocate any five-day narrowbody sequences that touch any of the block days below.
a. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day and Thanksgiving Day
b. The Sunday and Monday following Thanksgiving Day
c. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the day following Christmas Day
d. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
So am I to conclude that my 30 hour layover in ALB on Thanksgiving pays exactly ZERO holiday pay??? I won’t be “flying” on that day. I’ll just be sitting in the Hyatt all day getting nothing for my willingness to not call-out sick.
Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten that flu shot.

It’s BS when you look at what you’re getting paid for on thanksgiving day, but what are you flying the day prior? At the regional I was at, if your schedule touched that day you got min guarantee for that day whether you flew or not. But we also did not get paid for any other days that week.
It’s a trade off for sure. What would you rather have? 5:15 on thanksgiving and only thanksgiving day, or 200% on Wednesday, Thursday, Monday, Tuesday?

Have you been living in a cave since July? This has been discussed ad nauseam since the “Green July” LOA that created this.
If you believe Ed, the limit to only flying/deadheading/simming on that holiday is all on Tim Hamel. Ed says his handshake agreement with Isom during the Green July debacle was that all trips touching the agreed upon holidays triggered double pay, to include rigs. Tim Hamel pulled a Tim Hamel and met unilaterally with the company to hammer out the verbiage of the LOA and completely dropped the ball. Then it was too late- something like 60/80 pilots showed up for their illegally re-added trips, and all leverage was lost.

In my 10 years here holidays always have 30 hour layovers with the reduced schedule on the actual holiday. I roll my eyes when people claim they changed the actual schedule to reduce holiday pay.

This shouldn’t come as any surprise. If anything I’m surprised that some pilots are only just figuring out the ramifications of this LOA, nearly 5 months after it was signed. Even more surprised that any new-hire would choose to fly for American Airlines under this so-called “leadership” team.

“ flying” “on a day in the block” can only be talking about days that are not the actual holiday.
So a 30 hour in the block, but not the holiday, would not pay premium.
The agreement is titled holiday pay so it’s implied an actual holiday pays premium. The “flying” requirement is only applicable to “a day in the block” which does not describe a day that is an actual holiday, but days important to flying around a holiday.
Because it’s implied holiday pay is a premium, the details and “flying” requirements for “a day in the block” which would be a day other than the holiday have to be explained in detail which they are, but not to the detriment of denying actual holiday pay.
Are you off on Christmas?
Yes, I am off on a day in the block.
“Flying” requirement restricted to “a day in the block” and “day in the block” can never mean actual holiday.

I don’t like that loop hole either, but the reality is that the holiday pay has allowed very Jr pilots to get holidays off. if you look at various PBS Award reports, you will see that coverage dates for LH and Reserves mostly start with the 25th and 26th rather than Thanksgiving. Did you know about the loophole when you bid? Pretty easy to either try to get that day off or filter through the pairings and pick pairings that actually fly on Thanksgiving day. I could be wrong, but am pretty sure most pilots will only be forced to work 2 Christmases and 2 Thanksgivings in their career here. Their first year on property and after their first upgrade.

I don’t like that loop hole either, but the reality is that the holiday pay has allowed very Jr pilots to get holidays off. if you look at various PBS Award reports, you will see that coverage dates for LH and Reserves mostly start with the 25th and 26th rather than Thanksgiving. Did you know about the loophole when you bid? Pretty easy to either try to get that day off or filter through the pairings and pick pairings that actually fly on Thanksgiving day. I could be wrong, but am pretty sure most pilots will only be forced to work 2 Christmases and 2 Thanksgivings in their career here. Their first year on property and after their first upgrade.

I believe there is some misunderstanding going around regarding the pay. Once everyone figures it out out there will be less pilots bidding for it but will still help the junior pilots a little.
Xmas is a little better than Thanksgiving since it's 3 consecutive days but you could have a 4 day touching Thanksgiving and only get 5:15 premium.
