United has hired 3,000 pilot I read here since 2021. How many retirements does UA have coming up in the next decade? Delta has been hiring since 2015, and it was stated here that makes them less desirable. Does the same hold true for UA, also? Having hired 3,000 already. Would UA still be a good choice, in say two years time with the crap ton of pilots they're going to be hiring in that time frame, say vs. American?

Austin is practically an AA mini-base. Over 100 arrivals/departures per day. Plus with a very short commute to DFW that you could drive in a pinch, not sure why you wouldn't choose AA.
Legs per day? really? I'm sure they are all nearly the same. You can also increase your nights at home by bidding trips with Aus overnights. We have a LOT of them.

Don't have exact numbers but there are a lot of long layovers for AUS. I've had a lot more long than short there. We stay at the Marriott downtown for long layovers. I would say long layovers average about 18 hours and the shorts are around 12 to 13. There is a whole bank of early flights (5am, 6am, etc.) so those crews got in 12 - 1pm the day before.
Now one caveat I want to mention, being DFW based may actually decrease your chances of getting AUS overnights. I am not sure what the pairings are out of there. But from my base there are plenty. As a matter of fact you can get 4-day trips with all AUS overnights. For example day-1 early flight out of Base to DFW to AUS by noon. Next day AUS-MCO-AUS. Next day AUS-LAS-AUS. Last day either one leg from AUS to base or two legs AUS - DFW - Base. I was acutally getting sick of Austin overnights because for a while that is all I was getting on reserve.

Oh, okay. Sounds like either I misunderstood, or maybe the description I heard was for someone with significant seniority?
Hey, I saw on one of your posts that you've worked at both UA and AA! Can I ask what you think overall, given my situation:
- want max days at home
- want min trips per day
- 51 years old
- commuting from AUS (at least for the next 3 years)
- newly typed on 320 and enjoying it a lot, but WB has some appeal
- from NYC originally, so if I have to commute somewhere, that could be nice
- just started at B6, and really enjoying it so far
And to be fair, I only have interviews at UA and AA (no CJOs), but they're coming up very soon. Trying to wade through all of this now just in case, but maybe I won't even be forced to choose depending on the results of my interviews!

If you commute to reserve at UAL, it’s terrible. Being on long call and commuting is like being on short call at your home airport. Super sucks. Seniority doesn’t mean anything for reserve at United.

Commuting for UAL is a nightmare - need 2 flight options and jump seating is seniority based (so you can lose your seat to a senior pilot 2 minutes before departure, etc.)
PM me if you have more specific questions any time.

Congrats on the interviews and I'm sure you'll get both CJOs. Decide what's more important for you - WB on the coasts ASAP? Go with United. Better commuting rules (and proximity to DFW)? Go with AAL. I always recommend people to go with the legacy that allows little to no commute.

Can you request a jumpseat on international flights (UAL and AAL)?

you can definitely reserve the jumpseat, on a first come first serve basis, internationally on AA. The only gotcha is if OE is being given. That will be a more common threat as so many widebody guys retire the next few years

As I said previously, commuting for UAL sucks, it's beyond terrible. You will be bumped off the jump seat by people senior to you going on vacation while you're merely trying to get to work (and need 2 flight options as per UAL's commuter policy).

You missed the part about living in base and driving to work being the key to reserve bidding at UAL when utilization is low.
