Or can you pref LAX/ONT/SNA when you're on reserve to lessen the chance of having to drive all across the southland to get to work?

as a reserve in LA you can get reimbursed $300 a month for travel to SNA, ONT, etc. but not LAX. This is brand new to the contract and not sure how the flight office will try to account for tolls, mileage, etc. Uber receipts are easy. AA covers for parking regardless. You can create a proffer list for all the open time that day to try to get a certain airport. No guarantees, honoring seniority is the first priority for the company.

Skylarking,

I'm heading to class on NOV 29th. Prior H-60 driver. From what I understand if I want to get trips out of SAN I should pick the 737 correct? From reading the new contract the 737 SAN specific language was taken out, do I have that correct? Once I get senior enough and I want trips out of SAN should I choose 737 or 320. I see that there has not been any 737 LAX picks out of training. I know I can bid for LAX, just not sure of the timeline on when I could get there.

What are some good, SAFE and airport-commuting friendly places to live in around LA?
Is the Orange County (Irvine, Huntington Beach) or Long Beach/coastal Torrance feasible for someone working at the LAX base?
Starting in January and by the looks of the recent class drops LAX base starts to look like a likely scenario.
Thank you

Its called redfin.com. Everywhere in the southbay and orange county is expensive, including the ghetto. Most places are “safe”. Its your car you have to worry about in the less safe areas

Rent is very reasonable right now, it would not be smart to buy in this area (or any area, but particularly SoCal) or you will be caught upside down as prices correct. Check out Marina Del Rey, very nice community and you can live on the water.

+1 to this. However, any price correction in the more desirable parts of the LA basin will be temporary at best. Pricr corrections in CA coastal real estate tend to be a slowing of price appreciation, or maybe a temporary flat lining of prices. If any actual declines occur, they are short -lived. For anyone planning to live in the area long term, I'd advise buying. That said, as you pointed out, in certain CA metro areas (SF, LA,.SD), renting is indeed cheaper than buying, and CA rental laws are extremely favorable to tenants and hostile to landlords. So if the gentleman in question is thinking of staying in LA only a few years, then absolutely yes, renting makes more sense.

One thing to keep in mind with LAX is that the 405 freeway is complete lunacy during rush hour (6-10 am, 2-8 pm). It can easily take 90 minutes to drive from Huntington Beach to LAX during those times. If I were you I'd look at Marina del Rey, Manhattan/ Hermosa/ Redondo Beaches, and yes Torrance. If you are independently wealthy, then Palos Verdes. Culver City is pretty decent as well.

Be prepared for sticker shock, though. This is one of the most sought after places to live in the entire US and the prices reflect that. But when it's the middle of winter and the rest of the country is buried in "wintry mix" and you're at the beach sunning yourself in 70-degree weather, the traffic, high taxes, and high prices suddenly become more tolerable...

Thanks, all great points. I will research all those areas further.
One more question, would commuting from San Jose up north be reasonable for the first few months (Family there we could stay with)?
