You're comparing apples to oranges, and your figures are inaccurate. The Boeing 787-10 only partially aligns with the 'small' A350, but it falls significantly short in terms of range and payload capacity.

Total orders —
A350-900: 781
787-10: 262

That’s a miss if offered 330neo at a discount. however cap ex isn’t unlimited for multiple contingencies.

I believe you're correct. Wishful thinking they would bring back the 330 but as stated earlier it would be a training nightmare.

Maybe the 777 rumor is true where AA is looking into buying several from a foreign carrier?

I've heard that from multiple sources. Makes sense since the planned 78 delivers are delayed. Only one can hope.

A spouse of a Flight Attendant told me that they were all set to but a couple from a foreign carrier before somebody else stepped in with a better offer they weren't willing to match.

Does AA need the range and payload of the 350? Or is the 787 more suited for our route network?

AA publicly quashed that rumor a month or so ago. The 330's are not coming back into service. They are still owned by AA, though I'm sure trying to sell. They've been sitting idle for nearly 4 years now so there will be a good bit of work to get them airworthy for the buyer.

Link has a paywall. But the 10Q table with deliveries shows the numbers. So 3 XLRs and 7 789's in 2024 (10) and then 21 and 4 in 2025 (25). That will improve the international footprint. If they keep paying down the debt as planned, that will also be an improvement on the balance sheet.
