You don't get compensated on the sharpness/smartness of your appearance, you get compensated on your (group's) ability to negotiate.

That is a completely valid opinion. If you would like to wear a hat, by all means you can continue to do so whether or not they become mandatory. However, many of us are not Marines, do not want to wear hats, or be forced to wear them because a very small group of pilots feel that the hat defines professionalism. This isn't the military, its time to move on.
Personally, hats make my head itch and I dont feel like walking around scratching my forehead for the next 30 years. Not all of us are bald or choose to have a tightly shaved military style haircut so looking like I just crawled out of bed everytime I take the hat off is also not appealing to me. Not to mention, unless you have a larger head and neck, they make most pilots look like twelve year olds playing dressup in daddys work clothes. I see lots of new hires in the regionals wearing them. Lots of them dont even shave yet wearing this big goofy hat. They seriously look twelve.

Well put Dimebag...I mean BassSlayer!! I KNOW I look like a little kid in these dumb-satellite-dish-shaped hats. I cringe at even the thought of being forced to wear these! Don't get me wrong, some people wear hats well (as I'm sure the Marine does), but I don't...Thanks!

You're right!
And your groups ability to negotiate is severely diminished when most of you group looks like clowns. Respect from across the table has a lot to do with it!

These days they probably do. They sure as he'll don't wear a tie and a short sleeve shirt. Back to hats they won't be mandatory, no airline has gone from none back to mandatory. The company doesnt want to buy 15000 hats and half the group wouldn't wear them mandatory or not, I know I wouldn't.
