True enuf... All trips must SHOW That you started at your base however, you actually may not. I just flew an open time trip out of MIA last week and the schedule showed that I started at HSV (my base) commercial to miami then on the schedule. I never saw HSV, went right to MIA from home. In another month my schedule showed that I started in HSV with a commercial to FRA, however I never saw HSV, commercial flight from home to FRA. Regardless of what you actually do they have to show on the schedule that you start and end at your base, whether or not you see it is another thing.
Glad you enjoyed your overtime trip
And not only what you said, but there are definitely ways to make gateway/whatever better for all pilots, including ones overseas.
It doesn't have to be either or, the right language benefits everyone.
I know you're in agreement that this group is sick of clauses benefiting a small slice of the group to the detriment of the majority.

Not correct. For example, I have had trips that start in HSV. I am scheduled to be Gatewayed to HSV, then DH on Atlas to Europe, then hotel, then maybe DH or airline to somewhere else in Europe, or the Middle East, then have my first operating leg. If I was living (or visiting) in Europe, I could simple get airlined to the location in Europe or the ME where my trip started, and go from there. Nothing illegal about that.
This was in regards to people possibly making under the table deals with scheduling to start overseas on a trip not in their original awarded pattern and not awarded by seniority to avoid the commute.
Just want to ask/clarify two things on this topic.
1) The most important thing I gather from this discussion about open time is that it must be published in open time so all pilots can bid for it right? Just so some outlier isn't calling the company and saying "I'm in XYZ and I'll take it" when another guy has followed the rules and bids for it.
2) Help me understand why/how often a pilot might have to travel on days off. In earlier discussions it seems like it happens mostly in situations like "I am based in ANC and I am starting a trip in ANC but I live in the lower 48."
Thanks!

2. If you live in Atlanta, and you are based in Anchorage you will have to use Gateway travel, jumpseat, or drive to ANC on day zero (what we call an X Day or day off). Atlas will buy the ticket, but it will be taxed as income. Most of your hotels will also be taxed as income. There are specific (complicated) rules about that. If you work a trip out of JFK, you will DH (not Gateway) to New York on day 1 of your pattern. You will be on the clock and not subject to any taxes as JFK is not your base.
I can not recommend anyone coming here unless you can not get hired anywhere else.

I lived in Florida and was based in ANC. I would leave my house, in the morning, two days prior to my duty day starting (I had to get adequate rest after all). Then I would usually finish about 1pm, go to the hotel for 5 hours and leave 8pm for the warmer weather. I would arrive at my gateway airport in the very late afternoon or after dark. There was absolutely no way around it. The airline schedules to and from ANC are lousy. And don't expect to upgrade. The oil workers pack these flights and have many more miles than any Atlas FO will ever have.
So doing the math, each rotation I gave an additional 3 days to the company for free. With two rotations a month (I've had three) that is six days taken from my days off every month.
Yes fairly often you are sent home a day or two early. But once home you are on home reserve. You are required to answer your phone and be at your gateway airport within 4 or 5 hours. You are still not off. And as I live close to a base, I was called on one of those R1 days (trip never happened).
Just my experience.
