This leads to another question I haven't seen answered here: when you're operating or chasing an aircraft around the world, are you traveling with the same crew the whole 17 days or are you meeting up with new crewmembers as you move around?

I'm starting training on Monday August 1st. I was told today by someone in HR that I this class would be based out of HSV. No complaints here. I am just happy to be starting. My question is to the Atlas guys already out on the line flying. If based out of HSV, are there specific trips unique to that domicile or is it soley based on what you bid?

A lot depends on your base. The MIA folks mainly go south on short trips. I'm JFK and have been going east around the world in 14 or 15 days the last few months. You will see lots of HHH, RMS, LGG, LUX, DXB, PVG, HKG and SYD. They are almost hubs for us. And you'll probably learn to check in with the tower in the local lingo in AMS, FRA, KGF and NBO. I was commercialing this month and when I'm getting on the plane I see a Captain I've flown with getting on too. I ask him where he's going and he says KMG airport for a charter. You never know.
I don't know how Cliff can get a one day trip, shortest I've had was 2, MIA-DOV and they had to position me to MIA on day one. I guess if a MIA based pilot was flying the trip it would have been one day.
It's rare for me to be with other crew members more than a day or two. You'd think at least one F/O would be pared with a Captain for the month but I'm never that F/O. Scheduling adds and removes the 3 and 4th as they need.

I've had months where the two of us awarded a trip never saw each other, in fact, that's the norm on the -400. One month, we DHed at the start of the pattern together, then saw each other on the DH home. I think ALL FNG's are HSV based until IOE is complete.

This current class of FNGs were all based in ANC for the first few weeks of class and when the base bid came out in mid July we all got our first choice for our new base except one who got his second choice.
To all the new hires starting next week, make your self known to those of us currently in class and we will take care of you. See you at breakfast at the Residence Inn.

I think the way it works (at least it was last year) is that all new hires are initially based in HSV. Probably the IOE works well for the company out of there...lots of hours in a short time. Of course, that may have changed during the past year. For us, when the class behind us came on line we were able to move on to whatever base we had bid and could hold. While in HSV and on IOE the training department will control your schedule. Once that's complete you will bid the trips available out of HSV until you move on to your chosen base. Out of HSV you'll see primarily HSV-LUX and Central/South America.

How long have you been swimming? I've been in it since Feb 23rd, and I'm thinking the same thing. But i believe the answer is as simple as; we will get selected out of the pool based on the score we received after the interview was over.
