The proposal was for C-5Ms because the TF-39 would never get civilian certification. Having flown them, I think the reliability would be what is needed. Especially if we operate them and support them differentyly than the AF. The 2 big hurdles were getting USAF approval to take the A models (1966-70) being retired for conversion and the cost of getting a civilian certification. The AF thinks having them parked in the boneyard is a great source of spare parts so they are skeptical. As for the certification, Lockheed doesn't want to front the cost without firm orders and most operators want to see that they can do it first. Kind of a stalemate.
The one thing you will find out about this management team is that they are unlike normal airlines...they think about the risks before committing to a project. They have and will walk away without blinking an eye. That's one of the reasons we've survived and thrived.

think about the risks ? - they have the company in debt over $1 billion -
we will see how it works out - hopefully for the best

We are now a company that is 20 years old...
I came on board when we were a mere 3.5 years old (I've been here since Dec 1996)...and Chowdry and company placed an order for 12 747-400F, and options for a further 12...and put a 3.5 year old business "in debt" to the tune of nearly $3 Billion. I think it turned out fine.

So, what's your point about $1 Billion in debt? I'm missing something here...

And it is the life that I'm just fine with...go work for an outfit that flies between ABC and XYZ ten times a day...no, thanks. There are those that want that...not me. I like the adventure, the great crews to fly with, and doing something very few US carriers and pilots are doing.
