Yes, it can happen. It happened in my class, so keep trying. I just finished training, and all I can say is this:
To all of you out there looking in, keep at it. I'm sure I'll have gripes eventually, after all I am a professional pilot.
However, this is my 4th rodeo, as it were, and this place has it together.

To simplify my question, what is the real difference for a 121 job between having the ATP and meeting ATP mins when the only real difference in the checkride is an 8710?
Do some air carriers not have designated examiners on their check airman roster maybe?

I always encourage folks to get every rating they can get their hands on, but that's just me.
Magpuller, consider it a way to whittle down the applicants, or maybe it's a motivation check. Seeing as how everybody gets a type rating here, maybe it's proof you can hack an ATP in at least one airplane already. I can't speak for HR, but you asked for my $.02, so there it is.

Can anyone explain the mentality behind this? Not a gripe, the mins are the mins and I'll get my ATP shortly, but the question is what difference does it really make to a carrier if the ATP is held or not as long as the candidate meets ATP mins and has the written done as in my case. There really isn't any difference in the sim training and final checkride for initial save maybe a steep turn. So why make that a requirement at all?

Also, with the new adjustment to the Part 121 minimum times to 1500 hours, the question might be, "Why haven't you gotten it yet?" Again, I say, there is stiff competition. How are you going to show you are worth it?
I am most certainly not trying to be a Debby Downer, but I've been coaching friends who are trying to get on here, and my universal reply is that you are trying to sell yourself. What do you offer? Every extra you bring to the table helps, up to and including all the certifications you are qualified for.

I'm pretty sure everyone has a ATP, we had some tprop people but they had TPIC in the tprop. I think I was the only one without TPIC in my class, but I did have a variety of experience (rj, heavy mil)

To Magpuller
For what it is worth.
The bottom line is that Atlas types everybody during initial. You can do a second in command rating as exceptions have been made in the past. I am an example of that. I took the full type ride after my furlough.
But the kicker in my case was that I had to get my ATP in order to start the job. I had my written complete when I interviewed. That was the deal the CP made with me as a conditional offer for the job 5 years ago. I had 2 weeks to get it done before my start date or lose out. These days, they are probably not going to be lenient with so many heavy qualified guys in the pool.
