The U.S. Department of Defense announced no fewer than 35 separate contract awards, worth a combined $1.78 billion Friday. A very significant portion of these funds, however, about 32%, was not spent on military hardware at all -- but on shipping costs.
Specifically, the U.S. Transportation Command awarded three contracts Friday, worth $171 million each, to hire FedEx (NYSE: FDX**) , UPS (NYSE: UPS**) , and Atlas Air Worldwide's (NASDAQ: AAWW**) Polar Air Cargo subsidiary to perform a second option year (out of four possible) on their respective indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity fixed-price contracts to perform Worldwide Express 5 (WWX-5) small package delivery services for the military. All three of these contracts will now run through Sept. 30, 2014.

Looks like these contracts are already being flown by the companies. No extra flying just a continuation of a contract already bid for and awarded. A lot of government contracts are renewed on an annual basis.

Has anyone deadheaded on China Eastern Airlines? Reading reviews of their history and srvice and I dont exactly get a warm fuzzy about getting on their flights. Called travel and scheduling says I have to contact management.

China Eastern is the new US Air of Asia for travel, they book it anytime they can as much as they can.

I've had no major beef with China Eastern's service although it's certainly not on par with Cathay, Singapore or Asiana (although they do seem to wait until they get to the runway to land). One time I was bumped out of business class when someone apparently was more important. Never mind that Atlas had paid for a business class seat. That was annoying.
