It was good, 30+ years ago. Assuming you were willing to pay higher home prices for the weather and beach.

Nostalgia is often sweeter than fact.

I remember it too well from 30 and 40 years ago to believe the sepia tones of fond memory.

There was just too much cultural chutzpah and arrogance to see it. The rest of the west saw it just fine.
