I am familiar with single engine turboprop operations starting in the near future in the United States.

What really impresses me is how "hush hush" the company and regulators are being.

Unmanned cargo is coming very soon (within the next few years).
Single pilot passenger for all size aircraft is not as far off as you think.
Sure it is plan on 10 to 15 years of the FAA coming up with rules then a aircraft manufacturer will have to build it.

Not familiar, are they doing the same?

Are those the guys using the "Optionally Piloted" Caravans in Iraq?

Wonder if they are involved in a civilian program.

The cooperation with the feds and cargo companies is shockingly efficient. It really caught me off guard on the progress and time table. They (the transport companies) are probably trying to establish a toe hold before any pushback can get organized.

I'm still guessing on 1 year for localized operations and 3 years to widespread deployment within the USA. The people with the money (the REAL money) seem to believe in this project.

It really doesn't effect the pax ops yet, but those planning to build time in a 135 cargo outfit might be in for a surprise.

No, they are doing tests in the Caribbean.

Like you said I agree the lower end will be hit first. Small 135 ops like Mountain Air, Keylime, and Ameriflight will go autonomous first. Hopefully it will stop there for a while.

The writing is definitely on the wall.

It does open up some interesting possibilities as far as business development goes though. Lots of small cities and towns in the Midwest and west that are pretty remote that can reconnect to our new economy via cheap electric cargo aircraft.

Ultimately, I'd like to be the guy working on this stuff vs sitting by and waiting for my job to disappear IMO.

3 years until widespread UAV integration into the national airspace system? That's a pipe dream dude. I do agree that unmanned is in the near future in certain areas, but you're not going to see these things in busy airspace anytime soon.

Well then why don’t you quit and go work for one of these companies? Not trying to be a d.

Yes they can experiment with drones and maybe even light prop conversions in limited geographic areas with very simple ATC systems.

But the national system is in NO way able to deal with unmanned autonomous aircraft... when the military does it, there's a rated pilot on the ground talking to ATC and flying the plane.

Crazy pipe dream no way it could happen that fast. You have no idea the regulatory hurdles required. They will not even have fully automated cars in that time frame.

I like the job personally and the income is great. One of the great things about this job is the time off and additional personal growth opportunities it can offer.

I truly hope it doesn't go away or become dumbed down. But why not get involved in the next generation as well?
