Should we be concerned for our future?

The Russians may succeed at taking all of Ukraine eventually but at a much higher cost than Putin had planned. And after they take it, they need to hold it. The resulting insurgency will eventually drive them out as history has demonstrated repeatedly. Russia will win the battles but lose the war.
About the only thing I am sure of is that nuclear nonproliferation is now dead. The Ukraine was once the third greatest nuclear power with 170 ICBMs and about 1700 nuclear warheads. They gave those up/sold those off after assurances from the U.K., the US, and Russia that their territorial integrity would be guaranteed.
Nobody is going to make that mistake again.

My guess is that Putin only planned on taking the eastern breakaway provinces but after seeing the nonresponse from the west, he decided to go for the whole country. Russia is making slow steady progress; I'm not sure where these western non-military pundits get the idea that this is going poorly for Putin.

No. He's facing serious mechanized resistance which requires a joint/combined-arms engagement but it turns out he cannot fly his own air force in support of his ground troops because they're so poorly trained they cannot avoid shooting each other. His air capability only has full freedom of action to attack civilian targets... if they operate near UA or their own ground forces, they'll get shwacked by trigger-happy air defenders. Doesn't help that UA and RU operate similar aircraft. Apparently the UA forces CAN manage joint ops.
He also has about 60% of his total ground forces in UA right now... he's over-extended by any objective metric.

Brought to you by “The Eternal Order of the Pedants Society”
Founded in 1476. Or 1599 (depending on calendar used) Unless you count the Great Schism of 1756. Redefined as “Great Schisms” in 1777 when it was noted there were more than two sides. Ongoing debates as to whether the “Great Pedant Reunification of 1950” was valid, as less than 100% of eligible pedants voted.

We’ll see if you’re still clowning around in a few weeks.
Let’s take a look at a legit quote from our current commander in chief.

I’m not excited to watch our weak leadership go “toe-to-toe” with anyone. I’m even less excited to watch Biden speak in the next 5 minutes. Does he know where he is? Who he’s taking about? Probably not without the script he’ll be reading off.

Non-response? He invaded from the north to take Kyiv like the day after he declared the Donbass a Russian-protected independent region. And the only thing "the west" hasn't done was join the fight with their own equipment, which hasn't been on the table for decades. Even during the Cold War, every effort was taken to not directly engaged Soviet forces.
