Thank you, CRJDriver, for replying about my BOI inquiry. I would greatly appreciate any contact info you might have! I'm planning to move to the Boise area later in 2009, and am trying to make contacts with any airline that I can. I'm also planning on using my CFI as well. Thank you for any numbers or emails you might provide!!

I currently work the ramp/load master for Frontier Airlines (mainline). I had no clue how the airline business worked, but now I do. Like many of you here I plan to work for a regional some day that may be Lynx or other. I do think you get a great perspective of what goes into play both below and above wing. Through this experience I have been able to solidify many relationships with current pilots whom I will be able to use as references. If you are able to get any employment with an airline, I'd highly recommend it. Good luck!

I'll second pretty much what everyone else is saying. The ramp has been a great experience. You really learn what you are getting into if you want to be a pilot.
Sometimes when the planes are delayed a little bit, I hang out in the cockpit and the pilots are usually more than happy to answer a few questions here and there about what different buttons do.
Just make sure you are careful out there! You can very quickly mess up your back or hurt any number of things on your body...plus your hearing...
If you can get it...go for it.

Again to echo everybody else, I just started doing part time work on the ramp with Delta. If anything, it's a fun job, you get to work around airplanes, it gives you a foot in the door, you build networks, you see the real inter workings of an airline, and best of all you get travel benefits!

While I do agree that working the ramp is great experience I do not feel that it will achieve any shortcuts. The experience on the ramp will certainly give you a perspective that you would otherwise not get - learn the business and operations as well as gain an understanding and compassion for what the job of a ramper entails. This will help you with teamwork when you do land that pilot gig.
What it won't do is open an otherwise closed door - you still must be competitive with regard to minimums. Whatever you do....stay flying.
Hope this helps!

Unfortunately I had to disable my PMs because people were asking in-depth questions when they really needed a consultation.
I'm happy to address questions where anyone can benefit - but if your question is "sensitive" in nature it may be best to schedule a time to speak on the telephone.
